Hilarious Video: Cat with Mad Roomba Riding Skillz

Roomba-wrangling Cat Harasses Pudgy Pitbull

Just when you thought you'd seen everything, a game-changing gem comes along that can only be described as one of the most preposterous videos ever involving a cat, a dog, a bath mat, a trashcan and a household appliance, in particular  -  the mechanical innovation that is the Roomba.

Apparently there are many Roomba-riding videos floating around in the ether, one of which includes sleeping kittens unceremoniously being flung off a Roomba – brought to my attention courtesy of The Washington Post. However this little jewel is cinematically different in that no animals were harmed or humiliated in the making of this film (…except maybe for the dog who get bitch slapped).

Cat Got Game – Team Kitty Roomba: 1, Team Dog: Zero.

My favorite thing about this video, shot by my new BFF, Texas Pitbull Sharky, is that not only does the cat hop on the Roomba without any coercion, but he confidently dominates the Roomba like a cowboy astride his steed. Even when the Roomba runs headlong into the bathroom wall, this crazy cat maintains his game face and casually hangs on, managing to harass his brother Sharky with a snarky drive-by swipe.

I wonder if this cat does windows?

Enjoy!

Calling All Sniffers: Search + Rescue Dogs Bound for Haiti

Rescue Dogs Taiwanese Haiti
Professionally trained "sniffer" search dogs from around the globe are being deployed this week to aid rescue operations in earthquake-ravaged Haiti. The National Disaster Search Dog Foundation posted a deployment on their website which calls to action the American organizations that train search and rescue dogs.

According to Discovery News, an international contingency of search and rescue doggies are being readied to aid the devastated people of Haiti. British, French, Chinese, Canadian, Russian, Peruvian, Mexican, Taiwanese and United States-based canine sniffer teams have been dispatched along with tons of tents, food and medical equipment.

New York-based canine handler Scott Mateyaschuk and his dog Aragon are headed to the island nation to help in the search and recovery of effort. Watch Mateyaschuk describe the mission below, and meet one of the brave four-legged rescuers.

Therapy Dogs: On a sweet and heart-warming note, some reports indicate that the presence of the doggies on the long flights to Haiti helped to ease the tension of the rescue workers on board the plane.

Good luck and a big thank you to Scott, Aragon and all the search and rescue teams!!!

What We’re Loving: Plush Katie Puff Nest Dog Beds

Companion Katie Puff Nesting Dog Bed

It's no secret that our pets simply love to fashion a cushy nest out of just about anything they can get their paws onto, particularly clean (or dirty) laundry, pillows, couch cushions, scraps of paper, socks, towels, bed sheets, blankets and most commonly – our laps!

However, these random nesting materials are not always ideal, suitable or available for our pets to slumber upon and with temperatures dropping, it's important as ever that your pet have a cozy bed to call their own that's up off of the cold hard floors.

Rest Assured

According to my test lab assistants, Schmoo & Zazou, the coziest, most luxurious bed on the market for the uber-nester in your family is the super plush Companion Katie Puff Dog Bed. Generously overstuffed, it is upholstered with lavish swirled chenille and envelops your pup in luxurious uber-coziness. In fact, when it comes to bedtime, this bed is honestly comfortable enough for me to consider it Plan B when my significant others' snoring becomes unbearable! SRSLY.

Pup’s Public Manners: 7 Training Tips for You + Your New Pooch

Public Manners: Steppin' Out for the First Time with Your New Pooch

Judging from recent trips to my favorite local coffee house in the last few weeks, there are a lots of darling new pooches in the neighborhood.  It's fun to take your new pup or dog with you to the local pet store, coffee house or out to lunch, but the first time you step out together in public can sometimes be nerve- racking, because everything is an entirely new experience…."OMG! A bird! OMG! A trash can! OMG! Hoardes of people!"

To ensure that outings with your new four-legged family member are safe, enjoyable and stress-free, we recommend the following handy training tips to ensure they become fully functioning members of society. I adopted my dog Zazou when he was two years old and have found these simple steps to be invaluable as we set out to experience new things together.

Handy Training Tips:

1. Make sure that pup responds to simple commands like sit and stay and knows how to walk on a leash. This will give you some tools to help control her during your outing.

2. When you are out in public, introduce them to as many different types of people as possible. Let them interact with kids, elderly, homeless people, people in uniform, with weird hats (SRSLY) and people of other ethnicities. When they meet these people, allow them to be friendly but make sure they don't jump. If they do, proffer a firm "No" and use a treat or the leash to make them sit before the person is allowed to pet pup again.

3. Introduce them to as many different types of noises and things as possible. Show them a balloon, a grocery cart or a garbage truck. This will help teach your dog that although something may be loud it doesn't mean he has to bark at it or be scared.

Puggle Pup  4. IMPORTANT: Be aware of your own feelings. It's normal to feel nervous when you first take the pup out or when you see another dog. However, you have to put that feeling aside when you are training. Dogs are very, very good at picking up on their owner's feelings. If they sense you are nervous, apprehensive or scared, it will only verify for them that other dogs/people are indeed a threatening situation where they need to protect themselves. Be as happy and upbeat as possible. If your dog can see that you are relaxed then she will relax as well.

5. Practice her commands. Make sure your pup learns that she has to listen to you in public as well. Set her up for success by asking her to do a simple command like a sit or a down.

6. If you are in a store, make sure that your dog walks next to you or behind you. If she is out front, she is more likely to get into trouble or startle a person.

7. Have fun and be sure to bring pick-up bags!

Lastly, be sure to watch the pavement temperature, as a blacktop tends to be 15-20 degrees warmer then other pavement so check to make sure it isn't too hot before you walk her across it.

Most Popular + Wackiest Pet Names of 2009

Jackson fro

Sit! Angry Donut, Sit

Our friends over at Petfinder.com have just released their annual ranking of the most popular and unusual pet names for 2009, compiled via their Facebook and Twitter pages. The results are not exactly surprising, as I believe some of these pet names have been hanging around this list for the last two decades….e.g., Daisy, Jack & Lady? Didn't we all grow up with a neighbor dog with at least one of these names?

Uh, I don't know….let's just call him Buddy…..uh, or Max.

For the third year in a row, the No. 1 and No. 2 names for dogs are "Buddy" and "Max," respectively. "Lucy" took the No. 1 spot for cats, and "Smokey" was a close runner up as the second most popular feline name….which is surprising, because I was really hoping that Mademoiselle Pouf-Pouf would gain some traction this year. Gaining in popularity and securing a spot on the top 10 list for both dogs and cats for the first time is "Bella."

The 10 most popular dog names for 2009:
1. Buddy
2. Max
3. Daisy
4. Lucy
5. Charlie
6. Bella
7. Molly
8. Jack
9. Sadie
10. Lady

The top 10 most popular names for cats for 2009:
1. Lucy
2. Smokey
3. Midnight
4. Bella
5. Molly
6. Daisy
7. Oreo
8. Shadow
9. Charlie
10. Angel

We shall call him -  "Hoseclamp!"

For kicks and giggles, Petfinder.com also compiled its top 10 favorite wacky names of the year, selected from more than 170 submissions the organization received through Facebook and Twitter.  I would love to know the story behind how these names were chosen, though we can likely guess with some accuracy how Moo Goo Guy Pan, Angry Donut and Maple Syrup acquired their anointed names.

1. Shyanne Thailand Moo Goo Guy Pan
2. Mr. Tomfoolery Scardeycat Eliot
3. Rusty Buckets
4. KeelHaul
5. Too Fancy for You
6. Angry Donut
7. Maple Syrup
8. Hoseclamp
9. Prince Xavier Binxley
10. Hoku-ho'okele-wa'a

Petfinder.com co-founder Betsy Saul also noted that an increasing number of pet parents are giving their furry family members middle names such as "Sunshine Ray," "Roxanna Bobanna Little" and "Madison Wisconsin." I suppose that my Lulu Schmoe-Schmoo Nadine McCulley also would fall into this category….though she typically only hears her middle name when ignoring me!

What's the wackiest pet name you've ever heard?
