Unconditional Love: As Close As Your Nearest Shelter, Rescue, or Muttropolis!

Allison Shamrell Pet PhotographyPhotograph
by Allison Shamrell, owner of Allison Shamrell Pet Photography, brand new to
the San Diego, California area.

What’s this unconditional
love we speak of? The love you receive from a four-legged family member of
course! If you’re in the market to make an addition to your family, we’d like
to share with you some benefits, pointers, and upcoming events in hopes of helping you
find your perfect match. We agree with The Humane Society that the following
benefits are reason enough to choose adoption!

You’ll save a life!

Unfortunately millions of
dogs and cats are euthanized each year because more pets are being given up to
shelters than those getting adopted from shelters. This number can only be
reduced if adoption numbers rise. In some cases, making the choice to adopt
means that you’ll be saving two lives instead of one, the one you adopt and the
space you make for another homeless animal to come into the shelter, allowing
them a chance to be adopted too!

You’ll find a healthy pet!

Many people assume that
animals in shelters are there because they were abused or have something wrong
with them, when the reality is that most animals end up in shelters due to
problems that their owners encountered (i.e. moving, divorce, lack of time
or money). Most shelters give their animals thorough examinations, vaccinations,
and some even spay or neuter. It isn’t uncommon for a shelter to also do
behavior screening to ensure that you’ll be adopting a pet right for you.

You’ll save money!

Adopting a pet is much less
expensive than buying one from another source whether it’s a pet store or breeder.
And if you get a pet that’s already spayed or neutered, you’ll be saving that
expense as well.

You’ll help in the fight against puppy mills and pet stores!

A few weeks back we shared our
thoughts on puppy mills
. We don’t agree with these profit driven
dog-breeding operations for a number of reasons, most importantly being their
shockingly inhuman treatment of animals. Because animals from puppy mill are
often sold in pet stores, the only way to bring their practices to a halt is to
stop purchasing animals from those retailers. By adopting, you can rest assured
that you are in no way supporting these cruel practices.

You’ll feel better!

Not only do pets give you
unconditional love, but they also have the power to put a smile on your face
and overall joy in your life. Pets have been shown to be psychologically,
emotionally and physically beneficial! They provide a sense of purpose and a
form of companionship. In a sense, they can be good medicine for anyone’s
well-being.

—–

So now you’re probably
wondering how to start the process. Well here are a few pointers from Petfinder
that we thought would start you out on the right foot. Petfinder is a great
resource and also offers excellent pointers on choosing the right pet
once you’ve found the right shelter.

1) Search
out and select a few nearby shelters.
Use online resources or your
local phone book to find nearby shelters or rescue groups. Depending on where
you live, you may need to travel a few hours to find the right fit. We host adoptions each month at all three of
our Southern California Muttropolis store
locations, a great opportunity to meet your next four-legged
family member. See details below.

2) Avoid
shelters that use very similar, general descriptions for their dogs.
Chances
are these shelters probably don’t know the personalities of their pets very
well.

3) Ask
each shelter about their return policy.
You want to find a shelter
that will accept the pet back at any time for the remainder of their life. This
shows that they are accepting full responsibility for each animal they come in
contact with.

4) Ask
each shelter about their adoption procedures.
For
many families it is important that every member is able to visit with the pet
outside of their kennel. If you run into a shelter that does not allow this,
take them off your list and move on to the next.

5) Ask
each shelter about their criteria for determining which pets are ready for
adoption.
Reputable shelters do temperament testing to
ensure that potentially dangerous pets are not available for adoption. If the
shelter you visit doesn’t deem this important, you and your family could be at
risk.

6) Attend
a training class or two.
Search out a trainer that you like who
motivates dogs with treats, toys and praise. Trainers, and their clients, can
be a great source for recommending shelters. If you encounter people who found their pet at a shelter, ask
about their experience.

7) Look beyond
a clean and/or new exterior when visiting shelters
. A
great team who truly cares for their animals is what you need to be looking for.
Some old or rundown shelters are staffed with fantastic people and house great animals,
but there are also shelters that are just as bad as they look. This goes for
the new, clean and bright shelters as well. Some treat their animals and potential
adopters well, but others are more a façade. Look for these things when you
visit the shelters you’re considering, and don’t be fooled.

8) Have
an open mind about the “kind” of dog you want.
If
you go to a shelter with a predetermined list of qualifications (age, breed,
sex, size, color, etc) you may have a tough time finding that perfect match.

Are you a Southern
Californian? Then you’re in luck! As mentioned previously, we hold adoptions
each month at all three of our store locations.
We partner with local shelters and rescue groups to do
our part in saving as many lives as we can. So far this year we’ve had 15 pets
adopted at our events, and last year we had 33. Now that doesn’t include those
introductions that later led to adoptions, as we only have numbers for “on-the-spot”
adoptions, but we are hopeful that more came from those initial introductions. We
love to help how we can, so take a look at our upcoming adoptions listed below and if you’re in the
market for a new pet, visit us soon!

Join Muttropolis in the Fight Against Puppy Mills

As a
company who loves and lives for our pets and the pets of our customers, we at
Muttropolis strive to stay up-to-date on current animal-related issues. Our
goal is to provide a voice for our furry friends in need who cannot speak up
for themselves and broaden awareness amongst the vast animal-loving community.

We
support many positive animal-related efforts, causes and movements, which in
turn means that there are also a few less than positive animal-related issues
we work to combat. A current and very close to home example of this is the proposed
ban against the sale of puppies, dogs, kittens, cats and rabbits in retail
environments in San Diego
.
We strongly support this ban and believe that eliminating the sale of these
animals in retail locations will help to prevent the sourcing of pets from
mills, along with other forms of irresponsible breeding.

Puppy Mills

We love
and appreciate all animals, no matter where they originated, and so we do not
treat pets that were previously purchased in a pet store differently, or look
down on their owners for that matter. We realize the majority of the population
is simply unaware of the inhumane practices that correspond with these retail
establishments; which is why at Muttropolis, we are committed to educating the
public on such matters.

We urge
people to adopt, or to search out a breed rescue or a reputable breeder to find
the perfect furry fit for their family. As you read on, we believe you will
feel as strongly as we do in support of this ban. Note, the information below
is only a small snapshot of the inhumane environments and practices of puppy
mills.

  • A puppy mill is a
commercial dog-breeding facility that focuses on increasing profit with little
overhead cost. The health and welfare of the animals is not a priority.
  • Puppy mills will breed
a female dog every time she is in heat. For instance, a 5 year old dog could
have given birth to 10 litters of puppies.
  • In puppy mills,
animals can spend most of their lives in cramped cages, with no room to play or
    exercise.
  • Often times, the water
and food provided for the puppies is contaminated, crawling with bugs. Puppies
    can even be malnourished.
  • Puppies in mills are
found with bleeding or swollen paws, feet falling through the wire cages,
severe tooth decay, ear infections, dehydration, and lesions on their eyes
    which often lead to blindness.
  • Most puppy mills have
no veterinary care, climate control, or protection for the animals from weather
    (hot, cold, rain, or snow).
  • With limited or no
regulations or enforcement, puppy mills have no cleanup control. This means
that dogs can be living in urine and feces for indefinite periods of time.

Society of the United States,
and PetsAdvisor.

How does
this relate back to the sale of pets in retail establishments? Often, these
store animals come from puppy mills and customers are given false information
about the dog’s lineage, health, breed and breeder, which is why it is so
important to be educated and not fall victim. Every year, retail pet stores
across America
sell around 500,000 dogs, while 5 to 7 million dogs enter shelters. Alarming
statistics such as these act as a wake up call, clearly demonstrating the need
to support adoptions and animal rescues. By doing so, we will help to put mills
out of business.

If you
would like to share your voice in support of this ban, please click here
and follow the instructions outlined by the San Diego Humane Society on how to
reach your city Council Member and make a difference. The more emails in
support that the Council Members receive will make a difference for the animals that cannot speak for themselves.

San Diego Humane Society and SPCA

This ban
will not infringe upon responsible breeders’ practices and sales. We realize
that many people need or prefer a specific breed for various reasons. If that
is the case for you and your family, we just ask that you do thorough research
to ensure that the breeder you choose is reputable and treats their animals
with exceptional care. If you decide that adoption is right for you, whether
from a breed specific rescue or non-breed specific group, take a look at the adoptions
opportunities
offered at all three of our Southern
California store locations. We do our best to provide great
opportunities to help you find your perfect match!

Dig This Deal: Save 20% on New Orijen Treats!

It’s that
time again! At the beginning of each month we announce our new Treat of the Month promotion. For the
whole month of July we’ll be offering 20% off Orijen Freeze-Dried Dog Treats. We’ve long carried dog and cat food
varieties from this trusted pet food source, but their freeze-dried treats are
brand new to our assortment and we hope you’re just as excited as we are!

Freeze-Dried Dog Treats

We carry a
variety of flavors including Original, Regional Red, Alberta Wild Boar, Broke
Lake Duck
, Black Angus Beef, Free-Range Bison and Ranch Raised Lamb, options to
compliment any pup’s dietary needs and preferences. All flavors are grain-free
and include only 100% all-natural ingredients sourced regionally near Orijen’s
headquarters in Alberta, Canada. Each
variety is gently freeze-dried to lock in the life-giving nutrition and amazing
flavors of the ingredients. No cooking or preservatives are used to create
these treats. Delicious, nutritious, and competitively priced, Orijen Freeze-Dried
Dog Treats make a great addition to any dog’s diet.

Orijen Varieties

Why choose
freeze-dried treats? For many years, freeze-drying has been regarded as the
highest standard of food preservation. Unlike conventional pet foods which are
cooked at high temperatures, Orijen’s freeze-dried treats and food are prepared
without cooking, which is what allows them to retain the natural properties of
their fresh ingredients. The freeze-drying process begins with a flash-freeze
to lock in the goodness. Then, at an extremely low temperature, the 18-hour freeze-drying
process converts any frozen water in the ingredients into vapor without
creating a liquid form. This means that only H20 is removed and ensures that
the treats and food retain all of their life-giving nutrients, amino acids,
digestive enzymes and taste. Although freeze-drying is costly, it’s the only
way to preserve meat without chemicals, irradiation, or heat damage to
nutrition.

When served freeze-dried food and treats, dogs are able to receive
all of the benefits and nourishment of a raw diet, just as mother-nature
intended.

Why choose
grain-free? Grains are a common allergy in dogs and can cause itchiness and
other uncomfortable symptoms. Because grains take much longer to break down in
the stomach, dogs often have trouble digesting them. Sticking with food and
treats that are grain-free will make a positive impact on any pup’s health.

Our Treat of the Month promotion on Orijen Freeze-Dried Dog Treats runs from
July 1st to July 31st, so act fast and visit us online or
in stores to enjoy these sizzling savings! Online customers can redeem this
special 20% offer at Muttropolis.com by using the code ORJ20 during checkout.
