Not only is a dog a best friend to a human, but it’s said that a kid’s development can be accelerated when interacting with the family pet daily. What a perfect excuse to just hang with your pup, right?

Once his diabetes was stable, Duffy was able to get eye surgery that gave him the ability to see once again. This video shows when Duffy saw his family for the first time after surgery. This emotional video is so beautiful and is sure to not only bring tears to your eyes, but give you a big smile!

Cuddle Buddies! Watch Cheetah and Pup Make the Ultimate Siblings

This article is four words: adorbs to the max. Our friends over at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park document this precious play date between an 8 week old puppy, Raina, and a 7 week old cheetah, Ruuxa. Raina was brought in to be a friend to Ruuxa, a lone cub who was rejected by his mother, and to also calm down the cheetah and teach him that there’s nothing scary in its public surroundings. We can’t wait to see this friendship between Raina and Ruuxa build!

Gear up for Summer!

Gear up for Summer

Bring on the heat! Although summer is the ample time for vacations and fun, it can get a little warm. Dogs, like humans, need to keep cool when the heat is blaring. With this in mind, we’ve rounded up the best products to keep your pup cool and happy!

When deciding what kind of apparel to fit your dog in during the warm weather, we recommend something that will cool their body. The ICool Vest is perfect for the warm weather – all you have to do is dip the vest in water, wring it out and you’re good to go! For those that have a dog that loves to swim, we recommend checking out the Float Coat – it’s the pups’ version of a life jacket!

ICool Vest  Ruffwear Float Coat

If you’d rather have your dog go without apparel this summer, there are some other ways to keep your pet safe from the sun and heat. Doggles are the perfect dog sunglasses and have 100% UV protection, promising protection of your furry BFF’s eyes. If you love to walk your pup, but are nervous about the heat of the cement, then dog boots may be your life saver! Not only do these boots keep moisture out, but the outsole protects and locks out dirt and debris while keeping your pup’s feet from burning.

Another way to cool down is (what else?) to play in the pool! We have some floatable toys like Loopies and Discs that will provide hours of fun in the sun while keeping cool! Another great toy to keep your pup cool is the Chilly Bone. The bone can be frozen multiple times and freezes in only an hour!

For those that are planning a road trip, pup water breaks are a must. To help keep your pup hydrated and reduce the bulk packaging of normal dog bowls, we have the Gulpy water dispenser, conveniently shaped in a water bottle, and bowls that are made to fit your car’s cup holder.

As we all know, fleas love to make an appearance during the summer. We offer a few different remedies to get rid of fleas, ranging from sprays to wipes to shampoos to supplements.

Tips To Keep Your Pets Safe This 4th of July

4th of July Dog

4th of July is here! We know you’re as excited about this holiday as we are, but your pets may not be as jazzed for the holiday. We wanted to provide some helpful tips to get you and your pup ready (and safe) for this fun holiday!

Make sure your pup has a tag. Having an ID tag on your pup’s collar is not only important for day-to-day use, but especially important for holidays! Be sure that your pup’s tag has up-to-date information before the big holiday. This way, in the unfortunate event that they get lost, they can be returned to Metal Engravable Tagyou promptly! If you encounter a lost pet, check to see if they have an ID tag. If they do, contact their owner, if they don’t, we recommend you take them to your local animal shelter – they’ll have the best chance of being reunited with their owners there. Each year, animal shelters across the country are prepared for receiving “4th of July dogs” that run off during fireworks celebrations.

Refrain from feeding pets human food and drinks. Although we know you want everyone to try your amazing BBQ or refreshing margarita, we advise you to keep your pup out of this taste test, as any change in a pet’s diet can result in indigestion and diarrhea – yuck! Foods like onions, chocolate, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough and drinks like alcohol and coffee are especially harmful and can be potentially toxic to animals. Ingestion of alcohol may cause intoxication and weakness that could lead to a coma and/or respiratory failure. The secret to making your pups happy while you and your guest feast? Have some yummy dog treats on hand – if your friends want to feed your pup, give them these!

Only apply sunscreen or insect repellent on dogs if it is specifically labeled for use on animals. If your pup eats any sunscreen and insect repellent that isn’t for animals, there’s a chance they can vomit, have diarrhea, have excessive thirst and drooling. Insect repellents that contain DEET are especially harmful and can lead to neurological problems.

Don’t let pups near matches and/or lighter fluid. Many types of matches contain chlorates, which if ingested can damage blood cells and lead to difficulty breathing, with the most severe cases resulting in kidney disease. Lighter fluid is also very harmful. It can cause skin irritation and if ingested, No Lighter Fluid Near Pupgastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop. Moral of the story: don’t have matches or lighter fluid near your pup!

Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products away from pets. If a pet were to ingest any one of these products, it can lead to stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. Much like lighter fluid, when these oils are inhaled they can cause aspiration pneumonia.

NEVER leave your pets alone in a vehicle on hot days. Leaving the windows down and/or parking in the shade is not good enough! Temperatures rise very quickly inside a car and since dogs sweat differently than humans, they are not able to cool themselves down enough and can suffer from serious health effects, even death. Many states have made it illegal to leave a pet in a car during extreme weather. Think about how hot you are in your car when the A/C is off – it’s 10 times worse for your pup!

Never use fireworks around pets. Dogs can possibly suffer from severe burns and /or trauma if they get too close to any fireworks, whether or not they are used because fireworks contain toxic substances including arsenic, potassium nitrate and other heavy metals. The noise and sight of fireworks displays can also freak pets out, leading to anxiety and distress. Most pets will try to get away from the noise so it is best to them in a safe and secure place, preferably at home. If you decide to have your pup join you during the fireworks show, we recommend wrapping them up in a blanket or a compressed shirt, like a Thundershirt, which can help relieve anxiety.

Bonus! Extra ways to get your pup prepped for the big day. If your pet is prone to anxiety, ask your
Take Your Dog for a Walkvet about ways to alleviate stress and anxiety prior to the holiday festivities. If you’re more into natural remedies, there are many natural calming products that may help with your pup’s anxiety. We also
recommend exercising your dog early in the day, whether they are prone to anxiety or not. Make sure that any off-leash time is securely fenced and any walks have a good leash as some people may set off fireworks before dark.

We hope these tips are helpful, and wish you and your pets a Happy 4th of July!

Take Your Dog to Work Day Done Right in Four Easy Steps

EditorSandy-thumb-608x482-23952

Numerous studies show that having a pet makes you happier and can even add years to your life.  We at Muttropolis know this, which is why we ALWAYS bring our dogs to work! There are endless positive paw-sabilities (har-har) to having a dog in the workplace, too – the International Journal of Workplace Health Management says that furry friends in the office can lead to lower stress levels among employees and boost morale. We love having our dogs in the office and frequently take breaks from staring at our computer screens to not only walk them, but pet them and kiss them as much as we can!

Take Your Dog to Work Day is celebrating its 15th year this Friday, June 20th, so why not bring your pup to the workplace? Here’s some tips to help you get the most out of Take Your Dog to Work Day:

1.       Create a Hospitable Environment

Everyone loves pets, but forewarning fellow employees of your plans of bringing your pup to work is always important, just in case someone has a pet allergy or you have any workers that are uncomfortable with the idea of having animals in the office. Once your plans are set, make sure to check out your office area, including:

  • Finding green space nearby for your pup to go to the bathroom (this is REALLY important – no one wants to have an accident on the work carpet!)
  • Bathing and grooming your pup before their debut, perhaps even dressing up your pup with designer dog collars or stylish dog apparel – why not!?
  • Eliminating or securing hazards such as poisonous plants, cleaners and electrical cords

2.       Bring a Doggie Bag

Just as you pack your lunch, be sure to bring all the necessary items for your dog. Food, treats, toys, poop bags and a leash are must-haves for the big day.

3.       Create a Comfort Zone

Make sure your work space if comfortable enough for your Bowser. To get your dog to love your work space, try to bring a bit of home to your office. Bringing a dog bed will make your dog feel like they’re at home!

4.       Plan an Exit Strategy

Accidents tend to happen – that’s okay! Make sure to bring pet-friendly disinfectant just in case an accidents occur. You may want to be prepared to take your dog home just in case he’s not comfy in the office space. Discuss plans with a manager ahead of time to ensure you will be able to take your dog home if you need to.

Take Your Dog to Work Day is a great way to introduce your co-workers to your furry best friend! By taking these few steps, you can ensure the day goes smoothly. For more ideas on how to make your pet comfortable at home or work, check out our selection of fun dog toys, dog collars, dog beds and more at www.muttropolis.com.

Can’t Wag Without: Estela and Reggie + Ricky

Estela

Meet Estela, one of our buyers at Muttropolis, and her pups, Regina and Ricky. Reggie is small and sassy, while Ricky is like a big teddy bear. These two are part of our modeling crew and wanted to share a few things they can’t wag without!

Reggie is your quintessential Jack Russell – busy, busy, busy! She loves going on walks, but gets a little too excited and pulls on the leash a lot. Her Buddy Belt not only is comfortable, but it eliminates pressure on Reggie’s tracheal area because of its unique step-in design. Buddy belts are genuine leather, so they are extremely long lasting – Reggie’s had hers for five years! Added bonus: once Reggie’s in the harness, she can’t get out, which is a good thing if she’s feeling feisty!

Reggie

Ricky is a fan of chews, with his favorite being the Braided Bully Stick. These all-natural, long-lasting chews are only made with one ingredient: free-range grass-fed cattle sourced from Brazil. The braided texture makes it perfect for maintaining oral health and encouraging good breath. But always keep an eye on your pups when they are gnawing any chew!  Ricky

Estela often changes Ricky and Reggie's collars, whether it's for product testing or just a new look so extra engravable ID tags are a must-have item. If they ever get out or wander away when traveling, the finder will have all your information and can let you know they have your pup.

Lastly, Reggie and Ricky could absolutely NEVER wag without their Bowsers Beds! Their matching beds have micro-velvet fabric and a high-memory polyester fiberfill inner cushion, making them super comfy and perfect for a good night’s sleep. The dog’s aren’t the only ones that love these beds – Estela loves these beds because washing them is a breeze – the cover unzips and can be either hand-washed or thrown in the washing machine!

This 9-Year-Old Built a Nonprofit, No-Kill Animal Shelter Out of His Garage to Help Stray Animals.

This story is truly inspiring. Ken, a 9 year old from the Philippines, wanted to help local stray dogs and cats in his neighborhood and creating a safe place for them to live in was his dream. That dream came sooner than expected, when pictures of Ken feeding some stray animals floated around the internet. Once people saw this picture, they donated money to Ken and he was able to raise enough money to pay for quality food, vet bills and lease a space for a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. Ken is an inspiration to all of us and we are proud of him and all that he continues to do. Go Ken!
