Unconditional Love: As Close As Your Nearest Shelter, Rescue, or Muttropolis!

Allison Shamrell Pet PhotographyPhotograph
by Allison Shamrell, owner of Allison Shamrell Pet Photography, brand new to
the San Diego, California area.

What’s this unconditional
love we speak of? The love you receive from a four-legged family member of
course! If you’re in the market to make an addition to your family, we’d like
to share with you some benefits, pointers, and upcoming events in hopes of helping you
find your perfect match. We agree with The Humane Society that the following
benefits are reason enough to choose adoption!

You’ll save a life!

Unfortunately millions of
dogs and cats are euthanized each year because more pets are being given up to
shelters than those getting adopted from shelters. This number can only be
reduced if adoption numbers rise. In some cases, making the choice to adopt
means that you’ll be saving two lives instead of one, the one you adopt and the
space you make for another homeless animal to come into the shelter, allowing
them a chance to be adopted too!

You’ll find a healthy pet!

Many people assume that
animals in shelters are there because they were abused or have something wrong
with them, when the reality is that most animals end up in shelters due to
problems that their owners encountered (i.e. moving, divorce, lack of time
or money). Most shelters give their animals thorough examinations, vaccinations,
and some even spay or neuter. It isn’t uncommon for a shelter to also do
behavior screening to ensure that you’ll be adopting a pet right for you.

You’ll save money!

Adopting a pet is much less
expensive than buying one from another source whether it’s a pet store or breeder.
And if you get a pet that’s already spayed or neutered, you’ll be saving that
expense as well.

You’ll help in the fight against puppy mills and pet stores!

A few weeks back we shared our
thoughts on puppy mills
. We don’t agree with these profit driven
dog-breeding operations for a number of reasons, most importantly being their
shockingly inhuman treatment of animals. Because animals from puppy mill are
often sold in pet stores, the only way to bring their practices to a halt is to
stop purchasing animals from those retailers. By adopting, you can rest assured
that you are in no way supporting these cruel practices.

You’ll feel better!

Not only do pets give you
unconditional love, but they also have the power to put a smile on your face
and overall joy in your life. Pets have been shown to be psychologically,
emotionally and physically beneficial! They provide a sense of purpose and a
form of companionship. In a sense, they can be good medicine for anyone’s
well-being.

—–

So now you’re probably
wondering how to start the process. Well here are a few pointers from Petfinder
that we thought would start you out on the right foot. Petfinder is a great
resource and also offers excellent pointers on choosing the right pet
once you’ve found the right shelter.

1) Search
out and select a few nearby shelters.
Use online resources or your
local phone book to find nearby shelters or rescue groups. Depending on where
you live, you may need to travel a few hours to find the right fit. We host adoptions each month at all three of
our Southern California Muttropolis store
locations, a great opportunity to meet your next four-legged
family member. See details below.

2) Avoid
shelters that use very similar, general descriptions for their dogs.
Chances
are these shelters probably don’t know the personalities of their pets very
well.

3) Ask
each shelter about their return policy.
You want to find a shelter
that will accept the pet back at any time for the remainder of their life. This
shows that they are accepting full responsibility for each animal they come in
contact with.

4) Ask
each shelter about their adoption procedures.
For
many families it is important that every member is able to visit with the pet
outside of their kennel. If you run into a shelter that does not allow this,
take them off your list and move on to the next.

5) Ask
each shelter about their criteria for determining which pets are ready for
adoption.
Reputable shelters do temperament testing to
ensure that potentially dangerous pets are not available for adoption. If the
shelter you visit doesn’t deem this important, you and your family could be at
risk.

6) Attend
a training class or two.
Search out a trainer that you like who
motivates dogs with treats, toys and praise. Trainers, and their clients, can
be a great source for recommending shelters. If you encounter people who found their pet at a shelter, ask
about their experience.

7) Look beyond
a clean and/or new exterior when visiting shelters
. A
great team who truly cares for their animals is what you need to be looking for.
Some old or rundown shelters are staffed with fantastic people and house great animals,
but there are also shelters that are just as bad as they look. This goes for
the new, clean and bright shelters as well. Some treat their animals and potential
adopters well, but others are more a façade. Look for these things when you
visit the shelters you’re considering, and don’t be fooled.

8) Have
an open mind about the “kind” of dog you want.
If
you go to a shelter with a predetermined list of qualifications (age, breed,
sex, size, color, etc) you may have a tough time finding that perfect match.

Are you a Southern
Californian? Then you’re in luck! As mentioned previously, we hold adoptions
each month at all three of our store locations.
We partner with local shelters and rescue groups to do
our part in saving as many lives as we can. So far this year we’ve had 15 pets
adopted at our events, and last year we had 33. Now that doesn’t include those
introductions that later led to adoptions, as we only have numbers for “on-the-spot”
adoptions, but we are hopeful that more came from those initial introductions. We
love to help how we can, so take a look at our upcoming adoptions listed below and if you’re in the
market for a new pet, visit us soon!

Dig This Deal: Buy 2 or More Select Bulk Chews and Save 20% During the Month of June!

Our
Muttropolis Treat of the Month for June includes all Barkworthies Bulk Chews. Buy 2 or more and you will receive 20% off!
Available in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, we have chews perfect for all discerning
pups’ preferences.

Main

Does your
doggie love bullies? Then you and your pup are in luck! Curly Bully Dog Chews, Flosser Dog Chews, Bully Ring Dog Chews and Bully Pretzel Dog Chews are a great,
healthy way to provide your pup with something to chew on that they are sure to
love! These chews promote healthy teeth and gums, and are made from 100%
all-natural free-range grass-fed beef, allowing for easy digestion. No bleaches
or chemicals are used in the manufacturing process. While mosts dogs are drawn to the taste, texture and smell
of bully sticks, some owners and picky pups prefer our Odor Free Bully Stick Dog Chews instead, which are also all-natural
and made with free-range grass-fed cattle.

HimiThe Himalayan Chew with Bully Stick Dog Chew is
a fantastic combination of two pup-approved favorites and looks like an appetizing popsicle! The bully stick portion is made from 100% all-natural free-range grass-fed
beef just like all other Barkworthies bulk chews and the Himalayan chew portion
is made from boiled yak and cow milk. A chewy and tasty treat, it is sure to
keep your pup busy.

Does your
dog need something a little stronger than a bully stick? The Elk Antler Dog Chews and Elk Split Antler Dog Chews, both made
in the USA,
are a much longer lasting healthy choice as dogs are forced to work to
gradually grind them down slowly. These all-natural, naturally shed chews are
sourced from theSplit Central Rocky Mountains. No
bleaches or chemicals are used in the manufacturing processes. As with any hard
chew, we recommend supervision as these elk antlers can break teeth if worked
too aggressively. Once the chew is small enough to swallow, we recommend that
it be taken away and replaced with a new one, a great reason to buy 2 or more!

Last but
not least, we have a delicious and nutritious Natural Dog Treat Stick that is great for spoiling, training or as
an anytime treat! These all-natural treat sticks are made with the finest
ingredients with no artificial flavors, wheat, corn or soy. They are addictive-free,
chemical-free and preservative-free. Since these treats are soft and healthy,
they are an excellent choice for puppies or senior dogs.

New to Muttropolis, the Fashionably Safe Collar & Leash Combo You’ve Been Searching For!

Pup-protector-logoWith safety at top of mind
and a dedication to finding the latest and most innovative products for your
pet, we’ve teamed up with Pup Protector
to be the first retailer to introduce their fashionably safe collars and
leashes!

Pup Protector was born
after tragedy struck Trevor Jensen and Naraku, his beloved Weimaraner. For six
years, the duo walked every morning before sunrise to maintain optimum mental
and physical health. However, one morning at 4:45AM, Trevor was struck by a car
after throwing Naraku out of the way. Not until that morning did Trevor realize
the real danger that the two of them faced going out in the dark without lights
and/or reflective gear. In search for a solution, Trevor was inspired to build
the Pup Protector brand.

Collar_black
Collar_white
Collar_grey
With a passion to protect every
dog that walks in the dark and a realization that there was nothing on the
market that could meet that need, Trevor started designing and developing a line
of ultra-bright lighted LED collars and leashes. Made with cutting edge
thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), often used in various eco-friendly products,
Pup Protector collars and leashes are safe and durable. Featuring a row of
extremely bright LED lights with three settings, one static and two different
flashing modes, protective pup parents are able to adjust for maximize
visibility, accommodating preferences and safety concerns. Each collar and
leash has a small battery affixed that will last for roughly 30 hours if lights
are left on static mode. If blinking, the battery life may last even longer.
For consumer convenience, all Pup Protector products are designed to use flat
batteries, also used for watches and financial calculators and available in
many retail locations.

Leash_blackLeash_whiteLeash_grey
The benefits of choosing a Pup
Protector collar and leash goes far beyond keeping your four-legged friend safe
during early morning or late night walks, you’re also able to (1)
easily spot your dog off leash, (2) distinguish your dog in a large pack or at
a dog park, (3) keep an eye on your dog in your yard, and (4) differentiate
between multiple dogs by choosing collars with different LED colors. Built on a
passion to protect and a desire to make a movement, Pup Protector stands behind
their products, offering a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

We
are pleased to stand behind the Pup Protector brand as well, supporting their growth
while being the first to offer these innovative, safe and stylish dog collars
and leashes. Beginning May 3rd, Pup Protector products will be
available in all three of our Southern California
store locations and online at Muttropolis.com. Time to suite your pup
up for safety!

Join Us & the ASPCA in Preventing Cruelty to Animals

Aspca_logo

In honor of the ASPCA’s Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Month,
we have been hosting extra adoptions in all three of our Muttropolis
stores. For those who don’t know, the ASPCA
is the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the first
humane society to be established in North America. Each year during the month
of April, they reintroduce an awareness campaign, urging supporters to “Go Orange for Animals.” Orange was chosen for the
campaign because it is a very vibrant, energetic color, used to motivate
supporters to join the campaign to improve the lives of animals across the
country. A wide variety of involvement
options are posted on the ASPCA website.

Dog adoptionWe know that awareness is
key to the success of this campaign, so please join us in educating current and
potential supporters about the abundance of physical, behavioral and environmental
signs of animal cruelty. Some common
signs and symptoms of animal cruelty include tick or flea infestations, wounds
on the body, patches of missing hair, extremely thin and starving animals,
limping, physical abuse, pets who are repeatedly left alone without food or
water, animals who are kept in extreme weather conditions, and animals who
cower in fear or act aggressively when approached.

In an effort to make it
easier to get involved, the ASPCA has compiled the following top 10 ways that
you can crack down on animal cruelty:

1)       Know who to call to report animal
cruelty.

2)       Get to know and look for the animals
in your neighborhood.

3)       Make the call.

4)       Provide as much information as
possible when reporting animal cruelty.

5)       Contact your local law enforcement
department and let them know that investigating animal cruelty should be a
priority.

6)       Fight for the passage of strong
anti-cruelty laws on federal, state and local levels by joining the ASPCA
Advocacy Brigade.

7)       Set a good example for others. If
you have pets, be sure to always show them the love and good care they deserve.

8)       Talk to your kids about how to treat
animals with kindness and respect.

9)       Support your local shelter or animal
rescue organization.

10)   Start a Neighborhood Watch Program.

To show our dedication and
support for this cause, we’ve hosted 1 to 2 pet adoption events every weekend in
April and will continue to do so through the end of the month. Listed below are the next three adoptions events, one in each
store.

Entertainment Time: DOGTV Viewing Party On March 9th

DogtvMuttropolis is moving into the entertainment
business, for an afternoon at least! We’re happy to be teaming up with DOGTV to host a viewing party for our
furry customers and adoring parents. DOGTV is cable’s first network for
canines, with every frame and sound designed 100% for dogs. The viewing party
will be held from 12pm to 3pm on Saturday, March 9th at our Newport Beach Muttropolis store in the Fashion Island
Shopping Center. “Puptails”
will be available for canine guests and special treats for their parents.

We’re dedicated to keeping a pulse on the latest and most innovative
products for pets, and that is why we have partnered with DOGTV. Many pups, and their owners, feel anxious
about their time apart, but with DOGTV that anxiety can be alleviated for
everyone. DOGTV promises all of the fidos in the world that they will never feel
alone again. A babysitter in a sense, DOGTV is for your dog when you can’t be!

Twopups

Committed
to preventing mental fatigue, depression and boredom, the creators of DOGTV have
conducted extensive research and found that dogs do in fact feel better in the
company of television, especially when the content is relaxing, stimulating, or
includes positive behavioral reinforcements. Soothing sounds with varying
frequencies are combined with carefully chosen visuals to generate different content
to calm, encourage playfulness, and expose dogs to habituating, comforting
stimuli.

DOGTV is available
on COX On DEMAND at a subscription
price of $4.99/month. For every attendee who brings in proof of a DOGTV
subscription, DOGTV will donate $5 to Recycled
Pets
, an all breed K-9 rescue group in Orange County.
Recycled Pets rescues adoptable dogs from county shelters who would otherwise
be killed and place them into responsible, loving, forever homes.

RemoteThe DOGTV
Viewing Party is a great opportunity to entertain and socialize your pup, while
also educating yourself on how DOGTV might fit into your life. And don’t
forget, if you purchase a subscription, or already have one, bring proof and you’ll
be giving back to pups in need! Our Newport
Beach store is located at 865 Newport Center Drive. We hope to see
you and your pup there, between 12pm and 3pm on March 9th.
