We have quite a few stories revolving around dogs this month! We love seeing dogs in the news, whether it be something hilarious, an interesting new study or something that’s sure to bring the tears. Have any pet-related stories you’d like to share with us? Post the stories on our Facebook page!

Your Pet Might be Peeved! Study Finds that Dogs Get Jealous Too

Well this explains a lot! Researchers at UC San Diego (right in our backyard!) conducted a study determining whether or not dogs have a sense of jealousy. 36 dogs and their owners were used in the study that consisted of noting dogs’ reactions of their owners petting animated toy dogs. The results are not surprising – dogs DO get jealous! Once the pups would see their owners petting the toy, they would try to break the connection between the owner and the toy. Just another way that dogs are like humans!

These Two Dogs Got Married and the Whole Thing is Straight out of Your Pinterest Wedding Board

Bring on the LOL’s! Hudson and Chelsea, two Dachshunds whose parents are good friends, had a wedding. Sounds cute, Hudson and Chelsearight? Be prepared for nothing that you’d expect, as these two were given the true Pinterest wedding treatment, from beautifully illustrated invitations to fabulous floral arrangements to a Bulldog officiate. If only we were invited to this wedding!

Missing Pennsylvania Dog Found 3,000 Miles Away from Home

Could you imagine getting a call that your lost pup was found 3,000 miles away?! The owner of 7-year old Jack Russell Terrier Gidget probably didn’t. Gidget had been missing from the owner’s house in Pennsylvania since late April and was found walking the suburbs of Portland in September. When Gidget was brought to the nearest shelter, they were able to determine through a microchip that she came from right outside of Philadelphia! No one really knows how or why Gidget was taken cross-country, but all that matters now is that she is found.

Life for Regular People vs. Life for Dog People

Dog LoveBuzzfeed has nailed it again with this photo comparison between life with a dog and life without. I’m sure you can all guess which life seems more fun and exciting. :)

Susie the Therapy Dog, Abused as a Puppy, Named Hero Dog of the Year

This one is a tearjerker for all the right reasons. Meet Susie, an adorable pit-bull mix that was beat and set on fire by her owner in 2009 after licking (also known as KISSING in dog speak) the owner’s child. This sweet baby suffered third-degree burns and her ears were burned off. Before you start crying out of sadness, let’s fast-forward to Susie’s recovery and an adoption by Donna Lawrence. Lawrence adopted Susie less than a year after she herself had been brutally attacked by a neglected pit bull, which Suziecaused her to lose her ability to have kids. Lawrence and Susie were meant to be, as they both learned to trust one another. Susie is now a therapy dog that helps people that have been through traumatic events and has even helped create stronger anti-cruelty laws in her home state of North Carolina (along with Lawrence, of course!).

Cuddle Buddies! Watch Cheetah and Pup Make the Ultimate Siblings

This article is four words: adorbs to the max. Our friends over at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park document this precious play date between an 8 week old puppy, Raina, and a 7 week old cheetah, Ruuxa. Raina was brought in to be a friend to Ruuxa, a lone cub who was rejected by his mother, and to also calm down the cheetah and teach him that there’s nothing scary in its public surroundings. We can’t wait to see this friendship between Raina and Ruuxa build!

This 9-Year-Old Built a Nonprofit, No-Kill Animal Shelter Out of His Garage to Help Stray Animals.

This story is truly inspiring. Ken, a 9 year old from the Philippines, wanted to help local stray dogs and cats in his neighborhood and creating a safe place for them to live in was his dream. That dream came sooner than expected, when pictures of Ken feeding some stray animals floated around the internet. Once people saw this picture, they donated money to Ken and he was able to raise enough money to pay for quality food, vet bills and lease a space for a non-profit, no-kill animal shelter. Ken is an inspiration to all of us and we are proud of him and all that he continues to do. Go Ken!

Join Muttropolis in the Fight Against Puppy Mills

As a
company who loves and lives for our pets and the pets of our customers, we at
Muttropolis strive to stay up-to-date on current animal-related issues. Our
goal is to provide a voice for our furry friends in need who cannot speak up
for themselves and broaden awareness amongst the vast animal-loving community.

We
support many positive animal-related efforts, causes and movements, which in
turn means that there are also a few less than positive animal-related issues
we work to combat. A current and very close to home example of this is the proposed
ban against the sale of puppies, dogs, kittens, cats and rabbits in retail
environments in San Diego
.
We strongly support this ban and believe that eliminating the sale of these
animals in retail locations will help to prevent the sourcing of pets from
mills, along with other forms of irresponsible breeding.

Puppy Mills

We love
and appreciate all animals, no matter where they originated, and so we do not
treat pets that were previously purchased in a pet store differently, or look
down on their owners for that matter. We realize the majority of the population
is simply unaware of the inhumane practices that correspond with these retail
establishments; which is why at Muttropolis, we are committed to educating the
public on such matters.

We urge
people to adopt, or to search out a breed rescue or a reputable breeder to find
the perfect furry fit for their family. As you read on, we believe you will
feel as strongly as we do in support of this ban. Note, the information below
is only a small snapshot of the inhumane environments and practices of puppy
mills.

  • A puppy mill is a
commercial dog-breeding facility that focuses on increasing profit with little
overhead cost. The health and welfare of the animals is not a priority.
  • Puppy mills will breed
a female dog every time she is in heat. For instance, a 5 year old dog could
have given birth to 10 litters of puppies.
  • In puppy mills,
animals can spend most of their lives in cramped cages, with no room to play or
    exercise.
  • Often times, the water
and food provided for the puppies is contaminated, crawling with bugs. Puppies
    can even be malnourished.
  • Puppies in mills are
found with bleeding or swollen paws, feet falling through the wire cages,
severe tooth decay, ear infections, dehydration, and lesions on their eyes
    which often lead to blindness.
  • Most puppy mills have
no veterinary care, climate control, or protection for the animals from weather
    (hot, cold, rain, or snow).
  • With limited or no
regulations or enforcement, puppy mills have no cleanup control. This means
that dogs can be living in urine and feces for indefinite periods of time.

Society of the United States,
and PetsAdvisor.

How does
this relate back to the sale of pets in retail establishments? Often, these
store animals come from puppy mills and customers are given false information
about the dog’s lineage, health, breed and breeder, which is why it is so
important to be educated and not fall victim. Every year, retail pet stores
across America
sell around 500,000 dogs, while 5 to 7 million dogs enter shelters. Alarming
statistics such as these act as a wake up call, clearly demonstrating the need
to support adoptions and animal rescues. By doing so, we will help to put mills
out of business.

If you
would like to share your voice in support of this ban, please click here
and follow the instructions outlined by the San Diego Humane Society on how to
reach your city Council Member and make a difference. The more emails in
support that the Council Members receive will make a difference for the animals that cannot speak for themselves.

San Diego Humane Society and SPCA

This ban
will not infringe upon responsible breeders’ practices and sales. We realize
that many people need or prefer a specific breed for various reasons. If that
is the case for you and your family, we just ask that you do thorough research
to ensure that the breeder you choose is reputable and treats their animals
with exceptional care. If you decide that adoption is right for you, whether
from a breed specific rescue or non-breed specific group, take a look at the adoptions
opportunities
offered at all three of our Southern
California store locations. We do our best to provide great
opportunities to help you find your perfect match!

Top Tips To Keep Pets Safe During Hurricane Sandy

http://www.muttropolis.com/category/dog/designer-dog-clothing-gear-accessories-jackets-coats.cfmDon't forget to plan for your pets!

As Hurricane Sandy threatens land along the East Coast, it is important to plan for your pets when preparing for the storm. Our friends at the ASPCA and the Humane Society of the United States have provided us with top pet preparation tips to ensure pet safety if Hurricane Sandy and other looming storms reach your region.

[Related: Hurricane Ready: 6 Tips to Keep Pets Storm Safe ]

1) Prepare To Take Your Pets — Don't leave your pets at home. If you're planning to head to a Red Cross Shelter or hotel, remember that not all will take animals. Here's a list of directories for finding a pet-friendly hotel by the ASPCA. Other options include a veterinary clinic, animal control shelter or pet shelter.

2) Photos & ID's Please! — Keep a current photograph of your pet in case something happens to them during the storm. Identification in the form of a collar is also essential and will make it easier to locate them if they get lost.

3) Leash And Pet Carriers – Think about how exactly you will keep track of your pet during the storm, and how you will transport them should you decide to evacuate. A leash and/or pet carrier will ensure your animal doesn't go astray.

4) Bring Your Pet Inside — The last thing you want is to have to hunt for your pet on the brink of a hurricane. The National Hurricane Center suggests that owners calm and comfort pets inside well in advance of the actual storm.

5) What To Pack — The ASPCA recommends you pack five to seven days of pet food and water along with litter trays, litter and trash bags. Pet first aid kits might be a good idea, and remember their medications. If you are taking them to an animal shelter, you'll need to bring all of the above and ensure your pet has its rabies tags, up to date immunization records and labelled supplies.

What Is Your Pet Thankful For This Thanksgiving?

Thankful Dogs

by Janet McCulley, Muttropolis Co-founder

With Thanksgiving just hours away, it's important to step away from the stove, put down the gravy ladle and remember that the Thanksgiving holiday is really about expressing gratitude for the blessings and goodness in our lives  … in addition to consuming mass amounts of food and slipping into a food coma by 5pm.

In addition to reflecting upon the goodness in our own lives that we are thankful for, we thought that it might be fun to think about what our pets might be thankful for this Thanksgiving season!

20 Things My Dogs are Thankful for This Thanksgiving

To find out what my dogs Lulu, Zazou & Kiki ( pictured below) might be thankful for this season, we *snuck a peek* in their gratitude journals this week and here’s what we discovered they are thankful for…any of this look familiar?

Thanksgiving Dogs Muttropolis

From the Gratitude Journal of Zazou, Lulu & Kiki – "Wot we r tankful four dis howliday seeson."

[VIDEO] Owl + Pussycat Are True BFF’s

Hoot Love: Animal Odd Couple Fum & Gebra Really Do Dance By The Light of the Moon

Have you seen the amazing friendship between this animal odd couple? Hailing from Tarragona Spain, Fum (a black cat) and Gebra (a barn owl) have been together since they were one year old. According to their handler, they truly like each other and enjoy hanging out until they are bored of each other – just like normal couples.

Watch this amazing video where Fum (which means Smoke in Catalan) and Gebra (which means Frost) play together in a field and interact like old pals. I must say that I was a bit of a skeptic about the legitimacy of this video, but my research seems to indicate that they are legitimately buddies!
