Pet Health: Help Those Hot Paws!

Getty_rm_photo_of_dog_on_trail_with_woman

Summer is here and the heat is on! Have you noticed your pup trying to avoid that hot, black asphalt on your walks? Dogs’ pads are incredibly sensitive, therefore, the asphalt can be extremely harmful. One of our customers recently brought their 10-week-old Husky puppy in with burnt, cracking pads due to the hot pavement. The owner had taken him on a long run on the asphalt; this poor pup barely wanted to stand on his paws!

Anti Slip Dog Socks   Ruffwear Summit Trex Boots

We highly recommend covering your pup’s paws up by wearing socks or boots during this summer heat, especially if you take your pup on long mid-day walks or runs. Not only do they look super stylish, they protect your pups’ sensitive pads from the scorching asphalt! If the damage has already been done, like the Husky’s, we recommend using Vetericyn Wound and Skin Care Spray to disinfect and clean your pups’ paws. After the paws have been sprayed, bandage them with the Pawflex Bandages while their paws heal is. You can find these products at any of our Muttropolis locations or on our website!

Ways to Reduce Carbon Pawprints

Puppy WorldHappy Earth Day everyone! Here at Muttropolis we strive to have a pulse on what’s innovative, and eco-friendly pet products are just that! Organic dog toys, collars and leashes, biodegradable poop bags, and eco-friendly pet beds, are just a few of the many planet friendly pet products we are proud to carry. In celebration of Earth Day, we’d like to take it a step further and share some of our favorite eco-friendly pet practices. It's our hope that you and your pets will join us in reducing carbon pawprints by adopting some of these practices, not only on Earth Day, but everyday!

100% NaturalGet rid of pet junk food. Since nutrition is essential for optimum pet health, it's important to look for natural and organic pet food and treats, free of artificial and genetically engineered ingredients and additives. Look for meat sources that are raised in sustainable, humane conditions. Many pet food brands include reconstituted animal by-products, essentially low-grade wastes that humans wouldn’t touch, let alone eat. At Muttropolis, we carry a large variety of safe, All Natural Dog Food, All Natural Dog Treats, Natural Dog Supplements, and a small assortment of All Natural Cat Food and Treats as well.

PoopbagsPick up poop the biodegradable way.
Use biodegradable bags to pick up your pet’s poop so that it doesn’t live in a plastic bag at the bottom of a landfill, lasting for hundreds of years to come. We carry eco-friendly poop pick-up bags, some more so than others, with White Compostable Pick-up Bags at the top of the environmentally friendly list. They are made from 100% renewable resources, protecting the environment by degrading in as little as 40 days.

Spoil your pet with sustainable products. Saving the planet can be fun for your pets too! Choose products that are made from recycled materials or sustainable fibers. Hemp is a great choice, as it is one of the most abundantly occurring crops in nature and makes super-strong fabric. Check out our Hemp Star Dog Collar and Leash set that was seen on the CBS Early Show, or the popular Eco Nap Recycled Fleece Dog Mat, made from 85% recycled plastic soda bottles! Our sustainable product assortment doesn’t stop there, with many more toys and beds that are made from recyclable fibers, or made to be recycled.

Eco Nap Recycled Fleece Dog MatChoose natural pet care and cleaning products. We carry quite a few grooming products that are all natural and free of harsh chemicals, such as Richard’s Organics Deodorant Dog Shampoo and Petkin’s Eco Bamboo Pet Wipes and Eye Wipes, all gentle on your pet and the planet. Steer clear of those brands that produce chemical laced grooming products.

Make sure your pet always wears a tag. Losing a pet can be trying both emotionally and environmentally. Printing posters and driving around town in search of your missing four-legged friend has an environmental impact that could be avoided if you were alerted quickly that they were found. Whether you choose an electronic ID chip or a hang tag, the important thing is that your contact information is easily accessible. Our large Engravable Pet Tag assortment can be found at Muttropolis.com,  Large Chrome Bone Engravable Dog Tagand includes Chrome Pet Tags in a variety of shapes, Stainless Steel Pet Tags with different image and color options, and Decorate Metal Pet Tags. There is a style and size suitable for every pet!

ChickadeeProtect native wildlife. Believe it or not, domestic cats are one of the biggest bird predators. In fact, many neighborhoods require owners to attach a bell to their cat’s collar so that birds are less likely to fall victim. Unlike wild predators, house cats tend to be well taken care of and in great shape, making them ready to pounce at the chance to hunt. If you have an outdoor cat, consider a bell or keeping them in an enclosure.

Use birth control. Many of you probably haven’t thought of spaying and neutering as an eco-conscious decision, but the overpopulation of pets is a big problem and has a significant effect on the environment. Dogs and cats are carnivores and it takes a lot of land to provide them food. It makes you think differently about an accidental litter, doesn’t it? An added bonus, spaying and neutering can lead to longer, healthier lives by lessening and/or eliminating the possibility of certain cancers and disease.

Adopt from a shelter. If you’re in the market for a four-legged addition to your family, we urge you to consider adoption. Instead of diving into the adoption topic in this post, please head over to our adoption post where you can learn more about adoptions and our point of view on the matter.

Adoption

Now is as good a time as ever to start reducing your pet’s carbon pawprints! Visit us online or in one of our three Southern California store locations to shop our eco-friendly collection and learn more about planet friendly pet practices.

Toys to Please Every Pup

Dog Toys

Exercise, mental stimulation, bonding and fun!

These are just a few of the excellent benefits (and awesome reasons) to keep your pup playing! But with what, you may ask? Well, it’s no surprise that different dogs prefer to play in different ways, and so it can be tricky to shop for the appropriate toy. But don’t fret, we’ve encountered every type of playful pup in our day, from the mellow-mannered to the high-energy and aggressive, so here are a few words of wisdom to help point you in the right direction.

Small Chewy Vuitton Bone Dog ToyPissness Beer Dog ToyBird Dog Toy with Chew Guard

The Squeaker Obsessed. Does your doggie perk up to the sound of a squeaker? Well then plush and rubber toys will win their attention. Plush dog toys are often a favorite for their cute factor alone. They come in all shapes and sizes with snuggly soft exteriors and almost always a squeaker inside. Some even talk! If your pup likes to “baby” their toys, to carry them around and snuggle with them, then they’re sure to love plush toys. On the other hand, if your pup likes to play hard, plush toys may not be the best choice, as the majority aren’t made to withstand rigorous play, unless otherwise stated. We’ll talk more about tough toys in a bit. Rubber dog toys are also great for the squeaker obsessed pup and often funny too. The Pissness Beer Dog Toy always gets a good laugh! All of our toys are lead-free and non-toxic which is very important to keep your dog safe.

Frog Extra Tough Dog ToyMini Humunga Stache Dog ToyBaby Dragon Dog Toy with Chew Guard

The Tough Pup. Does your dog love to destroy? Are you having trouble keeping them busy and away from chewing your favorite personal items? If you answered yes to either of these questions, you’re definitely in need of some tough dog toys! We wish we could tell you that there are toys that aren’t destructible, but we’ve learned that’s not always the case. Even the most durable toys have a hard time standing up to the tenacity of gator-toothed Terriers, vice-jawed Vislas, squeaker-seeking Shelties and so on. But, the good news is that there are a variety of tough toys on the market that are specially designed to give their best shot! Available in a variety of sizes, colors, shapes and materials, you’re able to choose what best suits your dog’s interests and moods. You’ll notice in the product descriptions for tough toys that many are constructed with specially engineered fabrics and/or lining and reinforced stitches.

Mushroom Busy Buddy Dog ToyDog Magic Interactive Treat Game Monkey and Banana Burrow Dog Toy

The Challenge Seeker. Some pups simply aren’t interested in playtime unless it includes a challenge. We call these the sophisticated pups. If this sounds like your dog, we recommend trying interactive dog toys. Great for beating boredom, excellent for stimulating the mind and full of fun, interactive dog toys are a triple threat! Treat dispensing or treat maze toys are a hit with treat motivated pups, making them work for their reward. But if treats aren’t necessary to keep your pup’s interest, try a plush interactive toy like the Bunny and Carrot Burrow Dog Toy, shown at the top of this post with the adorable Great Dane puppy. Your pup’s intelligence and puzzle-solving skills will sharpen as they’re challenged with the fun task of removing the bunnies from the carrot each time you reinsert them. Learning is fun!

Mini Zisc Extra Tough Dog ToyBarkley Rubber Stick Dog ToyFloating Rope Ball Dog Toy

The Uber Energetic. For some dogs, energetic may be an understatement! If you have an active pup you’re probably familiar with the abundance of tantalizing toss and retrieve dog toys on the market. Boomerangs, discs, balls, ropes, sticks, slingshots and more. These are often the most fun for you, as well as your pup! It’s hard to pick a clear winner as some pups jump for joy for the classic tennis ball, while others will tug all afternoon but aren’t interested in retrieving. You know your four-legged friend the best, so trust your gut when choosing an active toy. Another upside, active toys force you and your dog to get outside. Visiting your local dog park or dog beach offers more room to run and to bond, with you and other pups.

There are just a few more things to keep in mind before making your next toy purchase.

  • Dog toys are not created equal, and neither are our beloved four-legged friends. Do your best to choose toys that are of the appropriate size, shape and construction. For example, very small toys can pose a choking hazard for larger breeds, just as toys with pieces that can be chewed off easily aren’t best for aggressive chewers.
  • Remember, pets should be supervised when playing with toys as no toy is indestructible.
  • To keep your pup from getting bored with their toys, switch them out on a regular basis. The novelty will last longer and hopefully remerge each time the toy makes another appearance.

Enjoy playing with your pup!

Dog-Friendly Home Design

Spring is underway, and for many this is the season for home improvements.

Whether you are about to embark on spring cleaning, redecorating, or even construction, we have a few share-worthy ways to incorporate your pet in your home improvement projects.

Light up their world.

Dog windows barkitect

The Barkitect recently wrote a great blog post about dog windows. Studies have shown that allowing dogs to see what is happening outside their confined space tends to reduce their stress. This concept is picking up steam and we’re seeing doggie daycare and boarding facilities incorporating dog windows in their facilities. As The Barkitect mentions, it’s a very interesting concept, one that can be incorporated in home design as well. Not only will strategically placing windows at low levels potentially elevate your pup’s mood, it will also create a visually unique look-and-feel, and bring more light into your home.

Maximize space with nooks.

Dog house under stairs

Whether your home is big or small, there is no need for wasted space, especially when your pet can benefit. How are you using the space underneath your stairs? Or the lower half of your closet? These are just a couple of the areas often overlooked in terms of design. Don’t fall into this trap, especially if you have a hound. Using these spaces for a dog nook, house, or built-in bed, is practical and can be a very visually pleasing solution to creating a special place for your pup. Need some inspiration? The Barkitect and Atticmag have great pictures to peruse.

Build dining in.

Dog feeding station in kitchen Dog bowl drawer
This dog-friendly design tip is a little more do-able for those of us who aren’t interested in a large overhaul. Creating a built-in feeding station is a great space saver, one that frees up floor space and keeps inevitable messes confined. Most built-in feeding stations are raised, which is recommended by veterinarians to help prevent pups from gulping down their food, which lessens the chances of digestion issues. Most of the designs we’ve seen are built into a kitchen island or a cabinet, some are even built-in to a drawer, offering quick and easy access and the ability to hide the bowls when breakfast or dinner is over. If you choose the latter, don't forget to have your pup's water elsewhere. Head over to TMS Architects’ site for more examples.

Keep them clean, conveniently.

Pet shower

You’ll never have to visit your local dog wash if you have one in your home! Adding a pet bathing station may be the most common of all these dog-friendly design additions, and what a great one it is. If you have a smaller pup you may want an elevated bath, whereas with larger dogs it’s nice to have a step-in standing shower design. Most people put them in their laundry room, but if space inside is limited the garage is a great alternative. It may be a pricey addition at first, but think of the money you'll save in grooming bills.

Don’t forget outdoor design.

Outdoor dog chaise lounge

For many down here in sunny Southern California, an outdoor living space is equally as important as indoor. So how do you incorporate your pet in your outdoor space? A traditional dog house is one way, but there are much more contemporary designs available these days. Take the Outdoor Dog Chaise Lounge for instance. It’s waterproof, made with synthetic weatherproof rattan, and provides your pup with shade from the sun. And did we mention how stylish it is? Traditional dog houses can take up a lot of room and are often too heavy to move. Instead, choose a lightweight design that provides your pup with a special place while also adding style to your outdoor setting.

Let the dog-friendly home improvements begin!

Get Active + Sooth Your Pup’s Spring Fever in San Diego

Spring forward is days away! How do you plan to enjoy your extra hour of evening light? Us busy office-bees have been buzzing about the many activities we’re planning to enjoy with our four-legged friends. Here are a few suggestions for getting active and soothing you and your pup’s spring fever in San Diego.

Make a splash

Dog Beach

We have some darn good dog beaches down here in San Diego. The Original Dog Beach down in Ocean Beach and North Beach Dog Run in Coronado are both open 24 hours and off leash approved! Del Mar Dog Beach is a favorite among North County residents, allowing off leash after Labor Day through June 16th. Does your dog fear waves? Well then Fiesta Island is a great alternative offering calmer waters and sand dunes. Located in Mission Bay Park, dogs are allowed in most all areas on Fiesta Island between 6:00AM – 10:00PM. Many other beaches allow dogs on leash at certain hours, so be aware of the rules and make your way to the sand for some splish splashin’ fun with your fido!

Take a hike

Dogs Hiking

Hitting the trails is much more fun with your hound in toe. San Diego County is filled with trails of varying levels, most giving a warm welcome to canine cohorts. DogVacay pulled together a list of some the top dog friendly hikes in San Diego, a great place for outdoor enthusiasts to start their search, providing brief overviews, addresses and hours. One of the most popular hikes in San Diego is Cowles Mountain, an up hill hike offering 360 degree views. Prefer a flatter trail? We’d suggest Los Penasquitos Canyon. The trail is surrounded by lush vegetation and a waterfall to enjoy at the end. If you and your pup are avid hikers and revel in serious heart pumping, Mt. Woodson, aka “Potato Chip Rock,” is a steep and strenuous dog-friendly hike. As with any outdoor activity, especially hiking in the heat, bring plenty of water for both you and your pup!

Visit a dog park

Dog Park

San Diego has so many to choose from! Canine Corners Dog Park in La Mesa, Poway Dog Park in Poway, and Nate’s PointGrape Street Dog Park and Morley Field Dog Park all in beautiful Balboa Park, are just a few of the many dog parks that stand out throughout the county. Giving your pup the freedom to run and play in a gigantic green space is a true treat when living in a city. Not only do parks allow your pup to exercise, they are also great places to work on healthy socialization with other dogs and humans, an important lesson for every dog to learn. If none of the parks mentioned are nearby, search out a dog park in your neighborhood. Off leash dog parks are ideal, but many parks that aren’t dog specific also allow dogs on a leash, an alternative to sidewalk exploring.

Grab a bite, a brew, or both

Dog and Beer

We’re in no shortage of dog-friendly drinking and dining down here San Diego, often referred to as one of the most dog-friendly cities in the US. San Diego Pets Magazine put together a helpful list of go-to dog friendly restaurants to visit with your pup. San Diego is also busting at the seams with microbreweries, many of which welcome furry friends. Culture Brewing Co, our neighbor on Cedros Avenue in Solana Beach, comes to mind as they quickly caught on with the dog-friendly North County crowd. AleSmith Brewing Company, Mission Brewery and Green Flash Brewery are just a few of the "big-beer-boys" that also welcome dogs. Other dog-friendly breweries can be found inside The Complete Guide To San Diego Breweries.

Wag Worthy Ways to Show Your Pup Some Love

Valentine's Day

Just one week ‘til Valentine’s Day, do you have something prepared for your pup? Whether you answered yes or no, here are a few excellent ideas to show your forever friend their special place in your heart.

Take a scenic walk. How does that saying go…variety is the spice of life! Instead of taking your usual stroll, cruise around your neighborhood in a different direction with your four-legged friend, or jump in the car and explore a new park, beach or trail. Your pup will enjoy the change of scenery and additional quality time with you.

Arrange a play date. Catching up with a friend over a cup of Joe, afternoon stroll, or evening on the town always leaves you feeling happier, right? Well pups love time with friends too! If your dog plays nicely with other dogs, invite another friendly pup over for a play date or set up a walk together. Socialization is great for dogs, especially with the additional exercise that comes with playtime.

Dog Play Date

Make them a new toy. If your pup loves playtime then adding new toys to their collection is a great way to keep them entertained. But another, environmentally friendly option is to make a new tug and toss worthy toy with old scraps of fabric. Old clothes, sheets, towels, whatever you have that can be saved from landing in the trash will work. Simply cut your fabric into strips, braid together and tie a knot at each end. Voila, your pup gets a new toy and you get green points!

All NaturalUpgrade their diet. Just like us, our pups can feel the effects of different foods. Reading labels is a great habit to make. Foods with little to no chemical preservatives and fewer processed ingredients are without a doubt going to provide your pup with better digestion and overall health. This doesn’t mean sacrificing taste, as many all-natural dog foods are not only nutritious, but delightfully delicious! Remember that any diet change should be introduced gradually to allow the digestive system to adjust.

Update their furnishings. Sleeping and eating are staples in every dog’s daily routine. Let’s start with the latter. Meal time may be most dogs’ favorite time of the day, so show your pup some love by letting them dine in style! A new bowl, feeder or treat jar would all fit the bill. But second to dining, or maybe even more enjoyed, is snoozing. There are an abundance of dog bed options on the market, so rest assured with our tips on how to pick the perfect dog bed for your pup.

Dog Sleeping

Give them a massage. Pamper your pup with a good massage, it will promote healing and bonding! It doesn’t have to be anything fancy, and an easy internet search will provide some tips on technique. Canine massage has been shown to increase circulation, reduce stress levels, and decrease muscle pain. Just stay aware of signs of discomfort and non-compliance to ensure it is an enjoyable experience for your four-legged friend.

Lavish them in green grooming. Clean is a great feeling, whether you’re furry or not. Have you ever seen a pup run around with glee after getting a bath? They love the refreshing feeling, but sometimes they aren’t so fond of the process. Many dogs have dry skin and allergies, so selecting gentle grooming products that are free of harsh chemicals is a must. Whether you are your pup’s groomer or you drop them off at the spa, be sure the products applied are safe and health friendly.

Dog Grooming

Ensure their safety. Saying goodbye to someone you love is hard, and in some cases, canine especially, can be avoided. Your pup should always wear a dog collar and ID tag, that way in the unfortunate event that they get lost the finder can reunite them with you. Many pet owners like to take their safety processions a step further and get their dog micro chipped. Part of loving your pup is keeping them safe!

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and your furry friends from Muttropolis!

Get Back to the Basics for Your Pup

Now that we’re all back in the swing of things, with New Years festivities behind us, it’s a great time to get back to basics! To us, basics are those things you wouldn’t want to, or shouldn’t have to, live without. So what would those basics be for your pup? Worry not, because we’ve got you covered with four categories that are important in maintaining your pup’s happiness, health and safety.

Dog ToysDog Grooming

Toys – Having fun is definitely a basic need, so be sure your pup has the right kind of toys to keep their endorphins up! Our vast assortment includes plush, interactive, toss and retrieve, tough, rubber, and funny dog toys. With an array of options, you’re sure to find at least a few your pup will fancy, tempting them to up their playtime.

Grooming – Every dog gets dirty, so grooming supplies are essential to keep your pup feeling fresh, smelling good and staying clean. Our grooming supplies include dog shampoos, conditioners, sprays and more. We recently started carrying BASS brushes, an excellent choice to aid you in keeping your pup’s coat tangle free. For nearly 30 years, BASS has designed, produced and sold the finest professional hairbrushes, and now they’ve created an innovative line of pet grooming brushes. And don’t forget about dental care. Keeping your pet’s gums healthy reduces bacteria and helps to keep them infection free. Dog toothbrushes and toothpaste are must-haves, but dental dog treats and dental dog toys are also excellent supplemental ways to fight plaque.

Dog DiningDog Collars

Dining – Food is an undeniable basic, a staple, an essential for a healthy life, and much like us, our pets have evolved to enjoy their meals served in some sort of bowl or feeder. Our dining department is stocked with dog bowls, raised dog feeders, treat jars and dog placemats. When determining which style is right for your pup, consider height. Raised feeders and bowls are recommended by veterinarians as they help your pup not to gulp down their food, thereby reducing air intake, and you guessed it, air outtake

Collars – We recommend regular walks to keep your pup fit and full of life, and what’s needed for a walk? A dog collar of course! Without a collar you can’t attach a leash, or an engravable pet tag, another basic we recommend to keep your pet safe. Whether your four-legged friend is big or small, likes to pull or keeps a calm pace, is a fashionista or prefers to look classic, our dog collar assortment includes just the right collar to meet their needs and suit their personality.

We could go on and on about other beneficial basics, but you get the gist. Visit us in-store or online to shop for these, and other, essentials for your pup. We’d love to help your pup get back to basics!

Tips To Keep Your Pets Safe This New Years Eve

Happy New Year

We’d like to wish you and your pets a very Happy New Year! With celebrations right around the corner, we wanted to share a few tips and suggested precautions to help keep your furry friends and family members safe and sound for the holiday.

Small Chrome Bone Engravable Pet TagCheck your pet’s ID. Be sure your dog is wearing an up-to-date and visible ID tag on their collar at all times. This way, in the unfortunate event that they get lost, they can be returned to you promptly!If you find a lost pet, check their tag first and contact their owner, but if they don’t have a tag, we recommend that you take them to your local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners. Each year, animal shelters across the country are prepared for receiving “New Years dogs” that run off during fireworks celebrations.

Peanut Butter MunchersKeep your pets on their normal diet. Human food and drinks should be out of reach of pets. Any change in a pet’s diet can result in indigestion and diarrhea. Foods and drinks such as alcohol, onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough are especially harmful and can be potentially toxic to animals. Ingestion of alcohol may cause intoxication and weakness that could lead to a coma and/or respiratory failure. Keeping dog treats on hand will allow guests who want to give your dog food a healthy and safe alternative.

Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of pets’ reach. Many types of matches contain chlorates, which if ingested can damage blood cells and lead to difficulty breathing, in the most severe cases it can result in kidney disease. Lighter fluid is also very harmful. It can cause skin irritation and if ingested, gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.

Never use fireworks around pets. When curious pets get too close to fireworks, whether activated or unused, there is the potential for severe burns and/or trauma. Many types of fireworks contain toxic substances including arsenic, potassium nitrate and other heavy metals. Also, the noise and sight of fireworks displays can spook pets, leading to anxiety and distress. Most pets will try to get away from the noise so it is best to them in a safe and secure place, preferably at home.

If needed, take additional precautions to keep your pet calm. Even well-adjusted pets can get anxious during out-of-the-ordinary events. If your pet is prone to anxiety, please consider consulting with your veterinarian on ways to alleviate their fear and anxiety prior to the New Years festivities.  ThundershirtThere are many natural calming products that may help. We also recommend exercising your dog early in the day, whether they are prone to anxiety or not. Make sure that any off-leash time is securely fenced and any walks have a good leash as some people may set off fireworks before dark.

We hope these tips are helpful, and wish you and your pets a safe and  Happy New Year!

Rest Assured: How to find the Perfect Dog Bed

To sprawl out or cuddle up? Sink in or feel firmness? Whatever sleeping style your pup prefers, we have just the right dog bed for them, the commonality being exceptional, luxurious quality that provides a comfy place for your pup to relax.

 Katie Puff Lounge Dog Bed by Animals Matter

You may be asking yourself, “Where to begin?” Searching for the perfect dog bed for your pup can be rather confusing. There are an abundance of different styles, shapes, sizes, materials, and more, making the choices endless. Our goal is to help you narrow down those options, so we’ve put together a few pointers to help guide you towards the perfect bed. Determining your dog’s needs and likes are most important, but there are quite a few additional things to consider. So read on, and hopefully you’ll feel much more educated on your next purchase!

~~~
Why does your dog need a bed?
Bright Indoor and Outdoor Dog MatEvery pet deserves a comfortable place to rest, and so a bed is an essential, but beds can also be used for a variety of training solutions. Giving your dog a place of their own makes them feel more secure and comfortable in your home, and often will keep them out of trouble. Beds can also be used for travel. Placing a small bed or mat in your car teaches your dog to stay in a safe place and alleviates distractions while you’re driving. Determining how and where your pup will use their bed is the first step in making the right choice.
Observe your dog.
Plush Companion Katie Puff Dog BedDoes your dog like to curl up in a ball or sprawl out? Do you have a puppy that might need a more durable fabric or a senior dog that could benefit from orthopedic support? Shape and design are the next features to consider when making your bedding choice. Bolstered beds, often called donuts or cuddlers, come in square, circular and oval shapes and are perfect for snuggly dogs who like to tuck their paws in and curl up tight. If you have a sprawler, your pup would be more comfortable on a pillow bed where they can easily stretch without restriction from a bolster. If you have an aging pet, a low, orthopedic bed may be easiest on their joints.
Doghouse Fun Dog Bed CoverMany beds are constructed to be machine washable, but some have components that must be hand washed. This is important to know prior to making your purchase, especially if you prefer to wash often or have a dog that is prone to making a mess. Have a new puppy? We recommend choosing a bed that you can easily care for, accommodating for their extra messes.
Sizing is key.
Honeycomb Couch Dog BedA bed purchase is a big purchase, so be sure you’re choosing a bed that is the correct size for your pup. While shopping you’ll notice that sizing is not standardized across manufactures or shapes, so just because you have a medium sized breed doesn’t mean that you should purchase a medium sized bed. If you’ll be buying your dog’s next bed online, we often recommend pulling out a tape measure or meter stick to get a good visual picture. While lying flat, completely stretched out, your dog should not hang off the bed. If your pet's measurements are in-between sizes, we recommend purchasing the larger of the two sizes.
Introducing a new bed to your dog.
Champagne Mousse Faux Fur Trundle Dog BedMany dogs are skeptical of their fancy new pad for the first few days. Properly introducing them to their new dog bed is a simple process. To help your dog get comfortable, use positive reinforcement and never use the dog bed as a place to go for punishment. Hide some healthy dog treats inside, cuddle with them on the dog bed, or give them a new bone to chew when they are lying on their bed. All of these supportive experiences will convince your pet that the new dog bed really belongs to them.
