Rest Assured: How to find the Perfect Dog Bed

To sprawl out or cuddle up? Sink in or feel firmness? Whatever sleeping style your pup prefers, we have just the right dog bed for them, the commonality being exceptional, luxurious quality that provides a comfy place for your pup to relax.

 Katie Puff Lounge Dog Bed by Animals Matter

You may be asking yourself, “Where to begin?” Searching for the perfect dog bed for your pup can be rather confusing. There are an abundance of different styles, shapes, sizes, materials, and more, making the choices endless. Our goal is to help you narrow down those options, so we’ve put together a few pointers to help guide you towards the perfect bed. Determining your dog’s needs and likes are most important, but there are quite a few additional things to consider. So read on, and hopefully you’ll feel much more educated on your next purchase!

~~~
Why does your dog need a bed?
Bright Indoor and Outdoor Dog MatEvery pet deserves a comfortable place to rest, and so a bed is an essential, but beds can also be used for a variety of training solutions. Giving your dog a place of their own makes them feel more secure and comfortable in your home, and often will keep them out of trouble. Beds can also be used for travel. Placing a small bed or mat in your car teaches your dog to stay in a safe place and alleviates distractions while you’re driving. Determining how and where your pup will use their bed is the first step in making the right choice.
Observe your dog.
Plush Companion Katie Puff Dog BedDoes your dog like to curl up in a ball or sprawl out? Do you have a puppy that might need a more durable fabric or a senior dog that could benefit from orthopedic support? Shape and design are the next features to consider when making your bedding choice. Bolstered beds, often called donuts or cuddlers, come in square, circular and oval shapes and are perfect for snuggly dogs who like to tuck their paws in and curl up tight. If you have a sprawler, your pup would be more comfortable on a pillow bed where they can easily stretch without restriction from a bolster. If you have an aging pet, a low, orthopedic bed may be easiest on their joints.
Doghouse Fun Dog Bed CoverMany beds are constructed to be machine washable, but some have components that must be hand washed. This is important to know prior to making your purchase, especially if you prefer to wash often or have a dog that is prone to making a mess. Have a new puppy? We recommend choosing a bed that you can easily care for, accommodating for their extra messes.
Sizing is key.
Honeycomb Couch Dog BedA bed purchase is a big purchase, so be sure you’re choosing a bed that is the correct size for your pup. While shopping you’ll notice that sizing is not standardized across manufactures or shapes, so just because you have a medium sized breed doesn’t mean that you should purchase a medium sized bed. If you’ll be buying your dog’s next bed online, we often recommend pulling out a tape measure or meter stick to get a good visual picture. While lying flat, completely stretched out, your dog should not hang off the bed. If your pet's measurements are in-between sizes, we recommend purchasing the larger of the two sizes.
Introducing a new bed to your dog.
Champagne Mousse Faux Fur Trundle Dog BedMany dogs are skeptical of their fancy new pad for the first few days. Properly introducing them to their new dog bed is a simple process. To help your dog get comfortable, use positive reinforcement and never use the dog bed as a place to go for punishment. Hide some healthy dog treats inside, cuddle with them on the dog bed, or give them a new bone to chew when they are lying on their bed. All of these supportive experiences will convince your pet that the new dog bed really belongs to them.
Looking for a new dog collar can be confusing, especially with such a plethora of different sizes, styles, materials and more to choose from! This is why we’ve compiled some tips to help guide you towards the right collar. To get started, we like to consider a few features including size, durability, safety and ability to clean.
~~~

SIZE

Unfortunately there is not a set of standard sizes for pets like there are for humans, so it’s very important to always look closely at the sizing for each collar you are considering. For the ideal fit, you will want to allow for one to three fingers to fit between the collar and your dog’s neck, depending on your dog’s size.So, when you measure your pup’s neck,
6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d2a1c9970d-200wibe sure to place the appropriate number of fingers underneath the measuring tape to find the true size.Below is a breakdown of how many fingers we advise according the size of the dog.

Small Size Dog (20 pounds or less) – 1 finger’s width
Medium / Average Sized Dog – 2 finger’s width
Extra Large Dog – 3 finger’s width

DURABILITY
6a00e55132d8be8834019b00ca005c970b-200wiDurability comes from both the fabric used to construct a collar as well as the closure. Quality nylon webbing is a sure bet when it comes to strength and durability! But leather collars can also provide the strength your pup needs, and quality leather softens with wear for a very comfortable fit. One thing to watch out for if you choose leather is potential wear around the buckle, so stay mindful of that.

Most nylon collars have plastic buckle closures. If you are purchasing your pup’s new collar in a store, be sure to open and close the buckle a few times and give the collar a good tug when closed to ensure it doesn’t pop open with force. If you choose a collar that has a traditional metal buckle and loops, you don’t have to worry about the risk of the collar popping open per say, but make sure that the hardware is quality and solidly secured on the collar.

6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d2705c970b-115wi   6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d25b8e970c-115wi 6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d25ae1970c-115wi  6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d270e5970b-115wi

SAFETY

Safety correlates quite a bit with durability, so be sure to cross-check the quality of the material and closures, but there are a few other things to be mindful of as well. Many pups need collars specific to training. These collars are often referred to as “slip,” “choke” or “martingale” collars, and are made with mostly leather or nylon with additional nylon or a chain link. This design is used to reduce tugging with a swift, clean correction. We don’t recommend using training collars everyday, just went necessary or until the behavior is corrected.

6a00e55132d8be8834019b00ca529a970d-800wi

Another safety concern that many small dog owners face is pressure on a pup’s neck. For smaller breeds, placing pressure on the neck, specifically the tracheal area, can cause coughing, gagging or choking. Harnesses are a great option for pups that have trouble with pulling, as they control the dog without placing pressure on their neck or back, but instead around the chest and breastbone.

It’s important to also be mindful of visibility when it is dark out. Check out our Night Safety Tips to learn the importance of outfitting your pups in the appropriate gear to ensure they are seen when it is dark out. We carry a collection of lighted and reflective collars to help keep your pup safe.

CLEANING6a00e55132d8be8834019b00c9f6c0970c-200wi

Is your pup extra active, often getting messy or playing in the water? If so, then a waterproof collar might be the perfect solution. Specially made to not absorb moisture, retain dirt and harbor bacteria, waterproof collars generally stay clean as is. And if your pup does manage to get them dirty, all you need to do is rinse the collar under warm water.

For those pups that aren’t quite as active or messy, but still need their collar to be freshened up from time to time, there are many nylon and fabric collar options that are easy to hand wash, or are machine washable. But pay special attention to the instructions on each collar, as many cannot be machine dried.

6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d26bae970c-200wiOnce you’ve considered these key collar features, it’s time to search out the style that best fits you and your pup’s personality. Night Safety Products & Tips, Just in Time for Halloween!

Dog Night Safety
As darkness continues to set in, we are here to help protect
your pup! Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 3rd, which
means our evenings will be much shorter than we’d like. Since the safety and
health of your pets is our top priority at Muttropolis, we’re dedicated to
finding the latest and most innovative products to help diminish any danger walking
in the dark may bring.

Many people don’t realize how mindful and prepared you
should be before going out in the early morning or late evening for walks or
runs with your four-legged friends. Venturing out without lights and/or
reflective gear can put our pups, and yourself, in harms way. Visibility is
poor when it is dark out, which means it is harder for you to see obstacles of
all sort, and for those live obstacles to see you. With that said, it is
crucial to use caution and be outfitted with the appropriate safety products.

Lighted Dog CollarLighted collars and leashes are hands-down our number one
recommendation. Unlike reflective products, lighted products provide
illumination even when light isn’t shining on them. Our Lighted Dog Collar and Lighted
Dog Leash
are
innovative and fashionable. They are made by Pup Protector with
cutting edge thermoplastic polyurethane and bright LED lights and feature three
settings. Pup Protector is a brand built on the mission to protect pups from
danger when it is dark out. Their products are durable, versatile, stylish and
sleek, and offer benefits far beyond keeping your four-legged friend safe
during early morning or late night walks and runs. When you choose a Pup
Protector collar and leash, you’re also able to:

(1) Easily spot your dog off leash

(2) Distinguish your dog in a large pack or at a dog park

(3) Keep an eye on your dog in your yard

(4) Differentiate between multiple dogs by choosing collars
with different LED colors

Ruffwear Beacon Dog Safety LightLooking for a little less light? Or have a non-lighted,
non-reflective collar and leash set that you’d like to continue to use in the
dark? Then safety lights are an
excellent choice for you. They easily attach to a collar, leash, or apparel. We
carry the Ruffwear Beacon Dog Safety
Light.
I
t
is lightweight, compact and clips on quickly and easily.
Featuring a high-intensity LED, it creates a halo of red light around the dog
and offers multiple blinking modes. Like a lighted collar or leash, this is an
excellent choice to ensure your pup is seen and can see. We recommend
purchasing more than one, that way you can wear one too. It’s better to be safe
than sorry!

Reflective collars and leashes, as well as reflective dog apparel, are also helpful in
low-light conditions. They increase visibility as long as there are lights
around to reflect off of them, so if you and your pup venture out near street
lights, building lights or headlights, then reflective products may be good for
the two of you. However, to stay on the safest side, we recommend reflective
products to accompany lighted products. We carry a wide selection across both
of these categories, many products made by reputable brands Ruffwear and RC Pets Products.

Ruffwear Knot-a-Just Reflective Dog Collar
Nylon Barrel Chested Dog Jacket

Even if you and your pup are outfitted with all the best
lighted and/or reflected products, be sure to always use caution and maintain an attitude of awareness. It’s a great
idea to carry a flashlight, that way you can stay in control of your
visibility. Many of our customers find headlamps useful. They free up your
hands and provide lots of light!

Sidewalks or walking trails are ideal, but if you have to
walk along a roadside, be sure to walk
against traffic
. That way you and yo
ur pup can easily see the traffic
coming and vice versa. And remember, what you wear makes a difference too! Veer
away from dark clothing and invest in something reflective, or take our
suggestion and purchase an extra safety light. Improving your visibility only
increases your combined visibility, and thus increases your safety.

So
suite up your pup (and yourself) for night safety and
don’t forget to always stay alert. The safety products discussed in the
post, and many others, can be found in any one of our three Southern
California store locations or online at Muttropolis.com.

We wish you and your furry friends a safe and
Happy Halloween!

Mix, a staff favorite, and extremely smart after having undergone extensive
training for etiquette, housetraining and tricks. He loves to perform
and thrives in active, athletic environments like the dog park. Huxley is just
over 7 years old and neutered. For more information about handsome Huxley and
the adoption process at the San Diego Humane Society, visit his profile. The video of him showing off his skills will

Unconditional Love: As Close As Your Nearest Shelter, Rescue, or Muttropolis!

Allison Shamrell Pet PhotographyPhotograph
by Allison Shamrell, owner of Allison Shamrell Pet Photography, brand new to
the San Diego, California area.

What’s this unconditional
love we speak of? The love you receive from a four-legged family member of
course! If you’re in the market to make an addition to your family, we’d like
to share with you some benefits, pointers, and upcoming events in hopes of helping you
find your perfect match. We agree with The Humane Society that the following
benefits are reason enough to choose adoption!

You’ll save a life!

Unfortunately millions of
dogs and cats are euthanized each year because more pets are being given up to
shelters than those getting adopted from shelters. This number can only be
reduced if adoption numbers rise. In some cases, making the choice to adopt
means that you’ll be saving two lives instead of one, the one you adopt and the
space you make for another homeless animal to come into the shelter, allowing
them a chance to be adopted too!

You’ll find a healthy pet!

Many people assume that
animals in shelters are there because they were abused or have something wrong
with them, when the reality is that most animals end up in shelters due to
problems that their owners encountered (i.e. moving, divorce, lack of time
or money). Most shelters give their animals thorough examinations, vaccinations,
and some even spay or neuter. It isn’t uncommon for a shelter to also do
behavior screening to ensure that you’ll be adopting a pet right for you.

You’ll save money!

Adopting a pet is much less
expensive than buying one from another source whether it’s a pet store or breeder.
And if you get a pet that’s already spayed or neutered, you’ll be saving that
expense as well.

You’ll help in the fight against puppy mills and pet stores!

A few weeks back we shared our
thoughts on puppy mills
. We don’t agree with these profit driven
dog-breeding operations for a number of reasons, most importantly being their
shockingly inhuman treatment of animals. Because animals from puppy mill are
often sold in pet stores, the only way to bring their practices to a halt is to
stop purchasing animals from those retailers. By adopting, you can rest assured
that you are in no way supporting these cruel practices.

You’ll feel better!

Not only do pets give you
unconditional love, but they also have the power to put a smile on your face
and overall joy in your life. Pets have been shown to be psychologically,
emotionally and physically beneficial! They provide a sense of purpose and a
form of companionship. In a sense, they can be good medicine for anyone’s
well-being.

—–

So now you’re probably
wondering how to start the process. Well here are a few pointers from Petfinder
that we thought would start you out on the right foot. Petfinder is a great
resource and also offers excellent pointers on choosing the right pet
once you’ve found the right shelter.

1) Search
out and select a few nearby shelters.
Use online resources or your
local phone book to find nearby shelters or rescue groups. Depending on where
you live, you may need to travel a few hours to find the right fit. We host adoptions each month at all three of
our Southern California Muttropolis store
locations, a great opportunity to meet your next four-legged
family member. See details below.

2) Avoid
shelters that use very similar, general descriptions for their dogs.
Chances
are these shelters probably don’t know the personalities of their pets very
well.

3) Ask
each shelter about their return policy.
You want to find a shelter
that will accept the pet back at any time for the remainder of their life. This
shows that they are accepting full responsibility for each animal they come in
contact with.

4) Ask
each shelter about their adoption procedures.
For
many families it is important that every member is able to visit with the pet
outside of their kennel. If you run into a shelter that does not allow this,
take them off your list and move on to the next.

5) Ask
each shelter about their criteria for determining which pets are ready for
adoption.
Reputable shelters do temperament testing to
ensure that potentially dangerous pets are not available for adoption. If the
shelter you visit doesn’t deem this important, you and your family could be at
risk.

6) Attend
a training class or two.
Search out a trainer that you like who
motivates dogs with treats, toys and praise. Trainers, and their clients, can
be a great source for recommending shelters. If you encounter people who found their pet at a shelter, ask
about their experience.

7) Look beyond
a clean and/or new exterior when visiting shelters
. A
great team who truly cares for their animals is what you need to be looking for.
Some old or rundown shelters are staffed with fantastic people and house great animals,
but there are also shelters that are just as bad as they look. This goes for
the new, clean and bright shelters as well. Some treat their animals and potential
adopters well, but others are more a façade. Look for these things when you
visit the shelters you’re considering, and don’t be fooled.

8) Have
an open mind about the “kind” of dog you want.
If
you go to a shelter with a predetermined list of qualifications (age, breed,
sex, size, color, etc) you may have a tough time finding that perfect match.

—–

Are you a Southern
Californian? Then you’re in luck! As mentioned previously, we hold adoptions
each month at all three of our store locations.
We partner with local shelters and rescue groups to do
our part in saving as many lives as we can. So far this year we’ve had 15 pets
adopted at our events, and last year we had 33. Now that doesn’t include those
introductions that later led to adoptions, as we only have numbers for “on-the-spot”
adoptions, but we are hopeful that more came from those initial introductions. We
love to help how we can, so take a look at our upcoming adoptions listed below and if you’re in the
market for a new pet, visit us soon!

Join Muttropolis in the Fight Against Puppy Mills

As a
company who loves and lives for our pets and the pets of our customers, we at
Muttropolis strive to stay up-to-date on current animal-related issues. Our
goal is to provide a voice for our furry friends in need who cannot speak up
for themselves and broaden awareness amongst the vast animal-loving community.

We
support many positive animal-related efforts, causes and movements, which in
turn means that there are also a few less than positive animal-related issues
we work to combat. A current and very close to home example of this is the proposed
ban against the sale of puppies, dogs, kittens, cats and rabbits in retail
environments in San Diego
.
We strongly support this ban and believe that eliminating the sale of these
animals in retail locations will help to prevent the sourcing of pets from
mills, along with other forms of irresponsible breeding.

Puppy Mills

We love
and appreciate all animals, no matter where they originated, and so we do not
treat pets that were previously purchased in a pet store differently, or look
down on their owners for that matter. We realize the majority of the population
is simply unaware of the inhumane practices that correspond with these retail
establishments; which is why at Muttropolis, we are committed to educating the
public on such matters.

We urge
people to adopt, or to search out a breed rescue or a reputable breeder to find
the perfect furry fit for their family. As you read on, we believe you will
feel as strongly as we do in support of this ban. Note, the information below
is only a small snapshot of the inhumane environments and practices of puppy
mills.

  • A puppy mill is a
    commercial dog-breeding facility that focuses on increasing profit with little
    overhead cost. The health and welfare of the animals is not a priority.
  • Puppy mills will breed
    a female dog every time she is in heat. For instance, a 5 year old dog could
    have given birth to 10 litters of puppies.
  • In puppy mills,
    animals can spend most of their lives in cramped cages, with no room to play or
    exercise.
  • Often times, the water
    and food provided for the puppies is contaminated, crawling with bugs. Puppies
    can even be malnourished.
  • Puppies in mills are
    found with bleeding or swollen paws, feet falling through the wire cages,
    severe tooth decay, ear infections, dehydration, and lesions on their eyes
    which often lead to blindness.
  • Most puppy mills have
    no veterinary care, climate control, or protection for the animals from weather
    (hot, cold, rain, or snow).
  • With limited or no
    regulations or enforcement, puppy mills have no cleanup control. This means
    that dogs can be living in urine and feces for indefinite periods of time.

How does
this relate back to the sale of pets in retail establishments? Often, these
store animals come from puppy mills and customers are given false information
about the dog’s lineage, health, breed and breeder, which is why it is so
important to be educated and not fall victim. Every year, retail pet stores
across America
sell around 500,000 dogs, while 5 to 7 million dogs enter shelters. Alarming
statistics such as these act as a wake up call, clearly demonstrating the need
to support adoptions and animal rescues. By doing so, we will help to put mills
out of business.

If you
would like to share your voice in support of this ban, please click here
and follow the instructions outlined by the San Diego Humane Society on how to
reach your city Council Member and make a difference. The more emails in
support that the Council Members receive will make a difference for the animals that cannot speak for themselves.

This ban
will not infringe upon responsible breeders’ practices and sales. We realize
that many people need or prefer a specific breed for various reasons. If that
is the case for you and your family, we just ask that you do thorough research
to ensure that the breeder you choose is reputable and treats their animals
with exceptional care. If you decide that adoption is right for you, whether
from a breed specific rescue or non-breed specific group, take a look at the adoptions
opportunities
offered at all three of our Southern
California store locations. We do our best to provide great
opportunities to help you find your perfect match!

Tips To Keep Your Pets Safe This 4th of July!

4th of July Dog

With 4th of July celebrations right around the
corner, we wanted to share some helpful tips and suggested precautions to keep
your four-legged friends and family members safe!

Check your pet’s
ID tag.
Be sure your dog is wearing an up-to-date and visible ID tag on their
collar at all times. This way, in the unfortunate event that they get lost,
they can be returned to you promptly! Each year, many dogs run away trying to escape the commotion of fireworks. Animal shelters across the country are prepared for receiving these “4th
of July dogs.” If
you find a lost pet, check their tag first and contact their owner, but if they
don’t have a tag, we recommend that you take them to your local animal shelter,
where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners.

Never use
fireworks around pets.
When curious pets get too close to fireworks, whether
activated or unused, there is the potential for severe burns and/or trauma. Many
types of fireworks contain toxic substances including arsenic, potassium
nitrate and other heavy metals. Also, the noise and sight of fireworks displays
can spook pets, leading to anxiety and distress. As previous mentioned, many pets will try to get away
from the commotion so it is best to keep them in a safe and secure place, preferably at
home.

Never leave your
pets alone in a vehicle on hot days, even if it is just for a few minutes.
Leaving
the windows down and/or parking in the shade is not good enough! Temperatures
rise very quickly inside a vehicle and since dogs sweat differently than
humans, they are not able to cool themselves down enough and can suffer from serious
health effects, including death. Due to this, many states have made it illegal to leave a
pet in a car during extreme weather.

Keep your pets
on their normal diet.
Human food and drinks should be out of reach of pets.
Any change in a pet’s diet can result in indigestion and diarrhea. Foods and
drinks such as alcohol, onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins,
salt and yeast dough are especially harmful and can be potentially toxic to
animals. Ingestion of alcohol may cause intoxication and weakness that could lead
to a coma and/or respiratory failure. Keeping dog treats on hand will allow guests
who want to give your dog food a healthy and safe alternative.

Always keep
matches and lighter fluid out of pets’ reach
.
Many types of matches contain
chlorates, which if ingested can damage blood cells and lead to difficulty
breathing, in the most severe cases it can result in kidney disease. Lighter
fluid is also very harmful and can cause skin irritation or gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression if ingested. If inhaled,
aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.

Keep citronella
candles, insect coils and oil products away from pets.
If a pet were to
ingest any one of these products, it can lead to stomach irritation and
possibly even central nervous system depression. Much like lighter fluid, when
these oils are inhaled they can cause aspiration pneumonia.

Never apply any
sunscreen or insect repellent product to your pet unless it is labeled
specifically for use on animals.
Ingestion of sunscreen products can result
in vomiting, diarrhea, excessive thirst and drooling. Insect repellents that
contain DEET are especially harmful and can lead to neurological problems.

If needed, take
additional precautions to keep your pet calm.
Even well-adjusted pets can
get anxious during out-of-the-ordinary events. If your pet is prone to anxiety,
please consider consulting with your veterinarian on ways to alleviate their
fear and anxiety prior to the 4th of July festivities. There are
many natural calming products that may help. We also recommend exercising your
dog early in the day, whether they are prone to anxiety or not. Make sure that
any off-leash time is securely fenced and any walks have a good leash as some
people may set off fireworks before dark.

We hope these tips are helpful, and wish you and your pets a
fantastic Independence Day filled with safe summertime fun!

This Friday, June 21st, is Take Your Dog To Work Day!

Did you
know there is a Take Your Dog To Work Day (TYDTWDay)?
Or better yet, an entire week? June 17th-21st has been
designated Take Your Pet To Work Week, with
Friday the 21st chosen as the special day. What a great occasion don’t you think? Not only does it get your
four-legged friend out of the house for the day, it also promotes pet adoption!

Dogs Meeting

So how does
it work? We’re urging all pet lovers to celebrate the human-canine bond by
encouraging their employers to support Take
Your Dog To Work Day
. Let your employer know that supporting and partaking
in this day promotes pet adoption from humane societies, animal shelters and
breed rescues. This occasion dates back to 1999 when it was created by Pet Sitters International (PSI) to
celebrate what great companions dogs make.

PSI put together
a handy list of tips to ensure that you and your pup are prepared for the big
day! Below is an overview, but to see each tip explained in more detail click here.

Good Planning + Good Dog = A Good Day

1. Do an office check

2. Puppy-proof your work space

3. Bathe and groom your dog before its
office debut

4. Prepare a doggie bag

5. Plan your pet’s feeding times
carefully

6. Avoid forcing co-workers to interact
with your dog

7. Have an exit strategy

Pet Sitters
International (PSI) asks that those businesses and employees who participate focus
on the fun and celebrate the value of pets in the workplace, all while emphasizing
and educating about the importance of adoption. PSI also requests that their
permission be granted before using TYDTWDay
events to advertise or promote specific products or services. Their licensing
and sponsorship opportunities can be found here.
