MUTT’S HAPPENING: CLEAR THE SHELTERS DAY

image003

Want to hear an interesting statistic? The ASPCA has recorded that about 7.6 million animals end up in animal shelters nationwide EVERY YEAR. All of these animals are looking for a loving family to take care of them and make them happy. The San Diego Humane Society, along with over 400 shelters in the US and Puerto Rico, are participating in Saturday’s Clear the Shelters Day, a day where specific shelters will discount adoption fees in order to “clear the shelters.” The one-day-only event was a success last year, with over 19,000 animals being adopted into their forever homes. We hope that this years’ event reaches over 20,000 adopted animals! We encourage any people looking for a new furry family member to visit your local shelter this Saturday, July 23rd, to help clear the shelters. To see a list of San Diego County animal shelters that are participating in this event, click here or tune into NBC7 and Telemundo to learn more.

Newsworthy Dogs Roundup

Tears, “aww” moments and laughter filled our hearts these last few weeks after reading some great pet-related stories. Check out a handful of our favorites below! Have any pet-related stories you’d like to share with us? Post the stories on our Facebook page!

Quadruple Amputee Dog Receives Life-Changing Prosthetics

This story went viral – and we know why! Brutus, an adorable Rottie, was left outside by a breeder when he was a puppy, causing frostbite on his paws. Because of the frostbite, he had to get his paws removed. After this pup became a quadruple amputee, Laura Aquilina rescued him from his breeder and got him fitted for prosthetics. Now, 2-year old Brutus is able to do anything he wants, thanks to these prosthetics. Bring us the tissues!

Doesn’t Brutus look so happy?!

Abandoned Kitten and Puppy Become Best Friends Despite All Odds

Who says cats and dogs can’t get along?! Chip, a five week old Chihuahua puppy, and Adele, a four week old kitten, found themselves at a no-kill shelter in Texas, Operation Kindness. The two were paired together at the shelter in March and became friends instantly. We’re pretty much obsessed with these two best buds and we hope that they get homes soon (or maybe even a home together!)! These are a few of our favorite pics of this dynamic duo.

Why Doesn’t Anybody Want Me? Heart-Melting Photo Leads to Shelter Dog’s Adoption

Whether some believe it or not, social media can get the ball rolling – in Chester’s, the older (believed to be 7-9) pit bull or pitty mix, case, it gave him a home. Chester had been in the caring hands of a New York animal shelter for 5 years, and had been overlooked too many times that the shelter wanted to do something more about it. Joining forces with an animal shelter promoter, the shelter posted a picture of Chester on Facebook with the accompanying message: “Why doesn’t anybody want me? I’ve been waiting for 5 years. Everyone at the shelter tells me what a good boy I am. So why has no one adopted me? I promise to be good and love my new family. Please, maybe you are my new family. I sit and wait for you to come.” Soon after the picture had been posted, it went crazy viral and caught Dana Dor’s eye, who then took her family to the shelter to meet Chester. The Dor family fell in love in with Chester in an instant and now he is living in a happy home. Moral of the story? Adopt, don’t shop!

Golden Retriever Caught Not Being Able to Catch

Oh Fritz, we feel for ya. This adorably awesome Golden Retriever is having some serious issues trying to catch any food that gets thrown at him! We feel your pain Fritz – pretty sure it would be hard for any human to catch food that was thrown at us, too! Oh wait – Buzzfeed did that! Check out the clip for yourself below to see Fritz’s laughable problems.

‘PooPrints’ DNA Test Traces Illicit Droppings Back to Owner

People that refuse to pick up their dogs’ feces, beware – you may get caught AND be fined!  Here’s the deal: bigger cities in the US are encouraging people to enroll their pups in a DNA-testing program that will be able to determine who refused to pick up their dog’s poop. This test includes “an inner cheek swab administered to a tenant’s dog after he moves into the building. The dog receives a number, which is added to a database. When the property managers spot rogue poops littering the area around the building, they can easily send a sample of the poop to a lab, where the culprit is identified in anywhere from 10 to 14 days.” What happens to the “poop”-ertrators? A fine that could cost you $100+. Moral of this story? Clean up your dog’s poop!!!

We’ve already admired two pups that have found loving homes, and recently
received our newest animal to admire, Huxley. He’s a male American Pit Bull Terrier
Mix, a staff favorite, and extremely smart after having undergone extensive
training for etiquette, housetraining and tricks. He loves to perform
and thrives in active, athletic environments like the dog park. Huxley is just
over 7 years old and neutered. For more information about handsome Huxley and
the adoption process at the San Diego Humane Society, visit his profile. The video of him showing off his skills will
win you over right away!Huxley is featured in many of the images below.

Awesome Being A Dog

We're happy to announce that we'll be joining KUSI's Sandie Lampe, with rescue pups from Holly's Garden Rescue, on Monday, August 26th for National Dog Day. A celebration of
"the dog
," National Dog Day is an
annual event created to raise awareness about the thousands of dogs in need of
forever homes as well as to honor those dogs that bring so much joy to our
lives.

To honor these pups, Monday’s segment will
focus on giving dogs something they love. Most dogs would agree that resting in a cozy bed or the
opportunity to travel with their owner are preferred ways to pass time. We have
a vast array of products across categories, including essentials to make these
loved activities even more enjoyable, and with the holidays fast approaching,
National Dog Day is a good reminder that it’s never too early to start shopping
for your four-legged family members.

Our bedding assortment ranges from innovative
and eco-friendly
dog bed duvet covers that allow you
the freedom to regularly swap out your pet’s bedding effortlessly and affordably,
to luxuriously overstuffed and bolstered designer dog beds. The options are nearly endless, with beds to
suite every owner’s style preference, dog’s sleeping style, and complement
differing home décors.

For avid four-legged travelers, we have car
seats, handbag and luggage style carriers
, along with many other travel
essentials. Whether it’s a cross-country adventure or a quick trip to the
beach, a car seat provides your pup with a comfortable place of their own and a
much better view of the scenery. Easy to install and covered in cozy,
machine-washable fabrics like micro-fiber or sherpa, they are a must-have for canines that like to cruise around.

So whether it’s snoozing comfortably,
traveling safely, or something entirely different that sparks your pup’s
attention, National Dog Day is the perfect time to celebrate and reward them
for their extraordinary companionship, and Muttropolis is the perfect
pup-spoiling headquarters!

Tune in to KUSI at 9:00 AM on Monday, August

Meet Simon, We Admire Him!

We’re very pleased to be an
“Animal Admirer” for the San Diego Humane Society. Simon is a sweet, senior beagle mix pup with an inquisitive nature
and an adorable personality! Simon is the second pup that we’ve admired so far
and we plan to continue to admire many more pets to come.

Simon(1)If we were to describe Simon
in three words, it would be mellow, intelligent and chatty! He has plenty of
energy for his age, just over 14 years, so that shouldn’t be a discouraging
factor. In fact, there are many benefits to adopting a senior pet. Simon has
already developed his personality and he isn’t in need of a whole bunch of
training, especially since he’s very easy going. He’s very social with people
and other pets, cats included, but can also hold his own when he has to spend
some time alone. We feel that Simon would do best in a home that compliments
his laid back ways, so if there are children in the family, we recommend they
are 8 years of age or older.

Where can you find this adorable
Simon? He’s currently located at the San Diego Humane Society in Oceanside at 5500 Gaines Street.
If you’re interested in
adopting Simon, or may know someone else who is, it would only cost a small
adoption fee of $25.00. Simon’s current
vaccinations, permanent microchip identification, a certificate for a free
veterinary exam, a gift from Hill’s Science Diet, and a license if residing in Oceanside or Vista are
all included with the adoption!

For more information visit Simon’s profile on the San
Diego Humane Society’s website. Simon’s animal ID number is 120023, which
you’ll want to reference when you go to visit him. Help us find Simon a
forever home!

For more up-to-date
information on the animals we’re admiring, follow us on Facebook.

Unconditional Love: As Close As Your Nearest Shelter, Rescue, or Muttropolis!

Allison Shamrell Pet PhotographyPhotograph
by Allison Shamrell, owner of Allison Shamrell Pet Photography, brand new to
the San Diego, California area.

What’s this unconditional
love we speak of? The love you receive from a four-legged family member of
course! If you’re in the market to make an addition to your family, we’d like
to share with you some benefits, pointers, and upcoming events in hopes of helping you
find your perfect match. We agree with The Humane Society that the following
benefits are reason enough to choose adoption!

You’ll save a life!

Unfortunately millions of
dogs and cats are euthanized each year because more pets are being given up to
shelters than those getting adopted from shelters. This number can only be
reduced if adoption numbers rise. In some cases, making the choice to adopt
means that you’ll be saving two lives instead of one, the one you adopt and the
space you make for another homeless animal to come into the shelter, allowing
them a chance to be adopted too!

You’ll find a healthy pet!

Many people assume that
animals in shelters are there because they were abused or have something wrong
with them, when the reality is that most animals end up in shelters due to
problems that their owners encountered (i.e. moving, divorce, lack of time
or money). Most shelters give their animals thorough examinations, vaccinations,
and some even spay or neuter. It isn’t uncommon for a shelter to also do
behavior screening to ensure that you’ll be adopting a pet right for you.

You’ll save money!

Adopting a pet is much less
expensive than buying one from another source whether it’s a pet store or breeder.
And if you get a pet that’s already spayed or neutered, you’ll be saving that
expense as well.

You’ll help in the fight against puppy mills and pet stores!

A few weeks back we shared our
thoughts on puppy mills
. We don’t agree with these profit driven
dog-breeding operations for a number of reasons, most importantly being their
shockingly inhuman treatment of animals. Because animals from puppy mill are
often sold in pet stores, the only way to bring their practices to a halt is to
stop purchasing animals from those retailers. By adopting, you can rest assured
that you are in no way supporting these cruel practices.

You’ll feel better!

Not only do pets give you
unconditional love, but they also have the power to put a smile on your face
and overall joy in your life. Pets have been shown to be psychologically,
emotionally and physically beneficial! They provide a sense of purpose and a
form of companionship. In a sense, they can be good medicine for anyone’s
well-being.

—–

So now you’re probably
wondering how to start the process. Well here are a few pointers from Petfinder
that we thought would start you out on the right foot. Petfinder is a great
resource and also offers excellent pointers on choosing the right pet
once you’ve found the right shelter.

1) Search
out and select a few nearby shelters.
Use online resources or your
local phone book to find nearby shelters or rescue groups. Depending on where
you live, you may need to travel a few hours to find the right fit. We host adoptions each month at all three of
our Southern California Muttropolis store
locations, a great opportunity to meet your next four-legged
family member. See details below.

2) Avoid
shelters that use very similar, general descriptions for their dogs.
Chances
are these shelters probably don’t know the personalities of their pets very
well.

3) Ask
each shelter about their return policy.
You want to find a shelter
that will accept the pet back at any time for the remainder of their life. This
shows that they are accepting full responsibility for each animal they come in
contact with.

4) Ask
each shelter about their adoption procedures.
For
many families it is important that every member is able to visit with the pet
outside of their kennel. If you run into a shelter that does not allow this,
take them off your list and move on to the next.

5) Ask
each shelter about their criteria for determining which pets are ready for
adoption.
Reputable shelters do temperament testing to
ensure that potentially dangerous pets are not available for adoption. If the
shelter you visit doesn’t deem this important, you and your family could be at
risk.

6) Attend
a training class or two.
Search out a trainer that you like who
motivates dogs with treats, toys and praise. Trainers, and their clients, can
be a great source for recommending shelters. If you encounter people who found their pet at a shelter, ask
about their experience.

7) Look beyond
a clean and/or new exterior when visiting shelters
. A
great team who truly cares for their animals is what you need to be looking for.
Some old or rundown shelters are staffed with fantastic people and house great animals,
but there are also shelters that are just as bad as they look. This goes for
the new, clean and bright shelters as well. Some treat their animals and potential
adopters well, but others are more a façade. Look for these things when you
visit the shelters you’re considering, and don’t be fooled.

8) Have
an open mind about the “kind” of dog you want.
If
you go to a shelter with a predetermined list of qualifications (age, breed,
sex, size, color, etc) you may have a tough time finding that perfect match.

—–

Are you a Southern
Californian? Then you’re in luck! As mentioned previously, we hold adoptions
each month at all three of our store locations.
We partner with local shelters and rescue groups to do
our part in saving as many lives as we can. So far this year we’ve had 15 pets
adopted at our events, and last year we had 33. Now that doesn’t include those
introductions that later led to adoptions, as we only have numbers for “on-the-spot”
adoptions, but we are hopeful that more came from those initial introductions. We
love to help how we can, so take a look at our upcoming adoptions listed below and if you’re in the
market for a new pet, visit us soon!
