MUTT’S UP? Holiday Travel Tips

Dog and Suitcase

It’s our favorite time of the year: the holidays! Bring on the chilly weather, joyous decorations and hometown visits! Whether you’re taking a short road trip or flying across the country, we’ve got some tips on bringing your furry friend along.

When travelling with your pooch, you want to make sure you have all the essentials. First on the checklist: a carrier or car seat. For dogs preparing for a flight, an airline-approved carrier is a must. Airline-approved favorites include the Kelle, Roxy and Charlie carriers. Not only do these carriers come in an array of colors, but they’re complete with multiple pockets to carry all your dog’s travelling needs. Taking a road trip? A car seat is perfect for your dog to rest comfortably during the drive. Car seats like the Companion and Lookout have a space for the seatbelt to attach, ensuring a safe space for your pup to rest.

Now that you know what your dog will be travelling in, it’s time to think about what to pack to keep them nice and happy throughout the trip. We recommend bringing some of your dog’s favorite treats and food along with a travel water bowl to keep them full and hydrated, an extra collar and leash in case of emergencies, extra poop bags for those potty breaks and pet wipes for sanitary purposes. A clean pup is a happy pup, right?! For the toy lover, bringing Bowser’s favorite toy on the journey will not only keep them preoccupied, but will make them feel more comfortable and at home.

Now that you and your pooch are prepared for the holidays, it’s time to take off! Check out more travel needs on our website or visit our three Southern California stores to learn more.

What We Love: Move into Movember with Us!

humunga-basil

In recent years, November has been deemed “Movember” in an effort to bring awareness to men’s health.  Men everywhere will be growing mustaches to raise money for prostate cancer research. We believe “man’s best friend” should get in on the fun too with our special edition Mustache Collection.

For dogs small to large, we have fun mustache collars to get into the spirit with a variety of styles including the ever popular Color-block Mustache Collar – a Mutt favorite!  Pair it with a matching Mustache-themed engraveable dog tag for the perfect ensemble. The front features a beautiful copper mustache with engraving on the back.

Of course this collection wouldn’t be complete without a toy. Be the talk of the dog park with our Humunga Stache Toy, which comes in a Mini version too. Get two-for-one with this toy – the inside is a rubber ball while the outside of the ball features an epic stache! This toy is sure to get a laugh or two! Our Mustache Collection allows us to bring awareness to a good cause. To check out our collection, go to our website or visit our three Southern California stores. Check it Out: New Collar Styles for any Pup!

Colllars

If you didn’t know, we LOVE collars. We have over 200 different collars to choose from (yes, that’s 200, not 20!), with styles ranging to basic leather to polka dot fabric to everything in between. Our extreme collar selection sets us apart from the rest!

We hand-pick every single collar that you see on our website. How do we distinguish between the collars we offer and the collars that don’t make the cut, you ask? Well, we always make sure our collars not only have a unique design, but are perfect for any type of pup – the preppy pup, the blinged out pup, the rugged pup, etc. We also make sure that the material used on our collars is of high quality and has durable hardware. Because no dog is the same, we offer a variety of sizes of collars, from teacups to big breeds.

Since it can be a mess to go through every single collar on our site, we have them categorized for ease: if you’re looking for a fabric collar, check out our Fabric + Nylon Collars and Stripes, Plaids + Solid Fabric Collars sections. Leather lovers have two sections as well to check out: Leather Collars and Sparkle Collars (for that extra touch of bling). For pups that are in training, we have a spot devoted to all Training Collars. Teacups have their own section, featuring adorable leather and fabric collars. Lastly, if you’re a night walker, we have a Lighted or Reflective Collars + Leashes section.

CollarSelection

You’ve found the collar you love. Now what? Time to measure your dog’s neck for perfect sizing! Our blog post from last year, “The Pursuit of the Perfect Collar” give you all the information you need on how to find the perfect collar size:

For the ideal fit, you will want to allow for one to three fingers to fit between the collar and your dog’s neck, depending on your dog’s size. So, when you measure your pup’s neck, be sure to place the appropriate number of fingers underneath the measuring tape to find the true size. Below is a breakdown of how many fingers we advise according the size of the dog:

Small Size Dog (20 pounds or less) – 1 finger’s width
Medium / Average Sized Dog – 2 finger’s width
Extra Large Dog – 3 finger’s width

Now that you know what size your pup is, it’s time to shop! Here’s an added bonus: get 10% off when you purchase a collar/leash set! Use code WALK10 at checkout to save. Shop away!

LIFE @ MUTT: We’re Turning 84 this Year (in Dog Years)!!

Mutt Munchers

We are so proud to be part of the community for the last 12 years. It’s been an amazing journey from our original store in Solana Beach to growing through the recession to 3 stores and a fast growing website!  As a utopia for pets and their parents, we’ve met thousands of new furry friends and helped hundreds of dogs and cats find forever homes. To celebrate this monumental month, we’re introducing two limited edition flavors: Anniversary Dessert Mix and Anniversary Meat Lovers Mix. An added bonus? We’re offering our entire line of locally-made Mutt Munchers $3 off!

The Anniversary Dessert Mix contains our most popular dessert flavors: Blueberry, Ginger and Peanut Butter, and the Anniversary Meat Mix contains our most popular meat flavors: Bacon, Meatball and Liver. In addition to our Anniversary Blends, we are bringing back our Seasonal Flavors, including Pumpkin Pie and Crown Roast. Other flavors include: Peanut Butter, Blueberry, Ginger, Salmon, Bacon, Liver and Meatball.

These treats are made locally in Carlsbad, are grain and gluten free and include only all-natural, human-grade ingredients. Garbanzo beans take the place of grains, resulting in a tasty treat packed full of protein and dietary fiber. Each Mutt Muncher is about 18-19 calories and have an approximate 1 year shelf-life if the bag is completely sealed.

Why grain-free? Grains are a common allergy in dogs and can cause itchiness and other uncomfortable symptoms. Because grains take much longer to break down in the stomach, dogs often have trouble digesting them. Sticking with food and treats that are grain-free will make a positive impact on any pup’s health.

Delicious, nutritious and cost efficient, Mutt Munchers make a great addition to any dog’s diet! Visit us online or in one of our Southern California store locations to enjoy these Anniversary savings! Online customers can redeem their discount by entering MOREMUNCH at checkout.

Halloween LOLz: Our Favorite Dog Halloween Costumes!

Ah, Halloween! It’s the one day each year where scaring people, getting a sugar high and dressing up in a costume is socially acceptable. Dogs do the first two things on a daily basis, and when it comes to October, the third thing is taken to a whole new level. If you didn’t know, dressing your pup up in a Halloween costume is totally a “thing” and people pull out ALL the stops. Need a visual? We’ve got 10 for ya.

Exhibit 1: The “Wrecking Pug”

Miley Cyrus’ ball has nothing on this pug. We give this costume an A+ – I mean, look at the Barbie riding the ball!

Whatever you do, do NOT hit this piñata with a bat. Instead, pet it!

Love Pumpkin Spice Lattes? You’ll love the Pop-kin Spice Latte even more! If this costume doesn’t win a best dressed contest, then they didn’t have the right judge.

Halloween Tips for your Pup!

Halloween pet safety tips

Halloween is a fun holiday for the whole family, including the pups! While getting everything prepared for the spookiest holiday of the year, we thought we’d help you in the pet department by sharing a few Mutt Tips!

Is your pup protective of the family? Dogs are über protective of their family, but when it comes to Halloween activities, protection goes to the next level (you have to remember, dogs can’t tell the difference between a costume and a family friend!). If you’re planning on bringing your pup with you to Halloween activities, we highly recommend having them on a leash. If you think your pup will be too protective, then let them hang out at home while you’re out.

Have a pup that loves people? Bring them along for the ride! You can even take it up a notch and dress them up in a sweet costume! The most important part of bringing your pup with you (besides the costume)? Don’t let them eat candy! Instead of having your pup gnaw on Halloween candy that can make them really sick (resulting in you having to clean their mess later or worse), have some healthy treats on hand to hand to Bowser while the kids are getting their candy. It will make trick-or-treating fun for everyone!

Have a shy guy? You don’t want to put your pup in a situation that makes them freak out. Give your dog the night off and let them hang out at the house while you’re out and about. All they’ll need is their bed, a fun toy and (obviously) some treats and they won’t even know you’re gone!

Bonus Tip: If you’re taking your pup with you, make sure they have an ID tag on their collar. It’s pretty unlikely, but there is a chance that your pup can run away because they’re frightened (if you had no clue why there were zombies or ghosts walking near you, wouldn’t you be a little frightened too?). By having an ID on their collar, you’re giving the finder of your pup a way to contact you so you can save your dog from being even more scared!

We hope we’ve given you a little advice on what to do with your pup during the Halloween festivities. Have a fun and safe Halloween! :)
