Keep your Pet Safe + Happy this Holiday Season!

Christmas Pup

We’re the first to say that the Holidays are the best time of year, but with all the fun to be had, it’s extremely important to stay safe – especially when it comes to keeping your pups out of harm’s way! Here are some helpful tips on how to keep your furry friends safe during the holidays!

  1. Keep your decorations pet friendly. When decorating your tree, keep the special ornaments at the tip top of the Christmas tree and hang wooden, metal or resin-cast ornaments on the lower branches in case your pup is a curious one. Whatever you do, do NOT let your pet near any electrical cords – playing or chewing these cords could cause injury or even electrocution. To prevent this, hide the cords by routing them through a PVC pipe.
  2. Don’t let Bowser near the holiday plants! Poinsettias, mistletoe and holly are all poisonous – if your pup accidentally eats any of these plants, there’s a chance they’ll experience vomiting, diarrhea or other serious health problems. Instead of having them nibble on plants, give them a nice, yummy treat to nibble on instead – it’s safer and much more delicious!
  3. Brrr! Keep your pup warm! The Holidays are a chilly time – even with the heaviest coats, cold weather is a serious risk to pups of all sizes. When it’s really cold out, only take your pup out for short periods of time and keep them nice and warm when outside.
  4. We know it’s tempting, but don’t give your furry friend any Holiday leftovers! Your mom’s holiday ham may have been amazing, but don’t share it with your pup – there’s a chance they could choke or get sick. Spoil them with delicious treats instead!

Now that we’ve hooked you up with some helpful tips, it’s time to celebrate the holidays! Happy Holidays from all of us to you!

Tips To Keep Your Pets Safe This 4th of July

4th of July Dog

4th of July is here! We know you’re as excited about this holiday as we are, but your pets may not be as jazzed for the holiday. We wanted to provide some helpful tips to get you and your pup ready (and safe) for this fun holiday!

Make sure your pup has a tag. Having an ID tag on your pup’s collar is not only important for day-to-day use, but especially important for holidays! Be sure that your pup’s tag has up-to-date information before the big holiday. This way, in the unfortunate event that they get lost, they can be returned to Metal Engravable Tagyou promptly!If you encounter a lost pet, check to see if they have an ID tag. If they do, contact their owner, if they don’t, we recommend you take them to your local animal shelter – they’ll have the best chance of being reunited with their owners there. Each year, animal shelters across the country are prepared for receiving “4th of July dogs” that run off during fireworks celebrations.

Refrain from feeding pets human food and drinks. Although we know you want everyone to try your amazing BBQ or refreshing margarita, we advise you to keep your pup out of this taste test, as any change in a pet’s diet can result in indigestion and diarrhea – yuck! Foods like onions, chocolate, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough and drinks like alcohol and coffee are especially harmful and can be potentially toxic to animals. Ingestion of alcohol may cause intoxication and weakness that could lead to a coma and/or respiratory failure. The secret to making your pups happy while you and your guest feast? Have some yummy dog treats on hand – if your friends want to feed your pup, give them these!

Only apply sunscreen or insect repellent on dogs if it is specifically labeled for use on animals. If your pup eats any sunscreen and insect repellent that isn’t for animals, there’s a chance they can vomit, have diarrhea, have excessive thirst and drooling. Insect repellents that contain DEET are especially harmful and can lead to neurological problems.

Don’t let pups near matches and/or lighter fluid. Many types of matches contain chlorates, which if ingested can damage blood cells and lead to difficulty breathing, with the most severe cases resulting in kidney disease. Lighter fluid is also very harmful. It can cause skin irritation and if ingested, No Lighter Fluid Near Pupgastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop. Moral of the story: don’t have matches or lighter fluid near your pup!

Keep citronella candles, insect coils and oil products away from pets. If a pet were to ingest any one of these products, it can lead to stomach irritation and possibly even central nervous system depression. Much like lighter fluid, when these oils are inhaled they can cause aspiration pneumonia.

NEVER leave your pets alone in a vehicle on hot days. Leaving the windows down and/or parking in the shade is not good enough! Temperatures rise very quickly inside a car and since dogs sweat differently than humans, they are not able to cool themselves down enough and can suffer from serious health effects, even death. Many states have made it illegal to leave a pet in a car during extreme weather. Think about how hot you are in your car when the A/C is off – it’s 10 times worse for your pup!

Never use fireworks around pets. Dogs can possibly suffer from severe burns and /or trauma if they get too close to any fireworks, whether or not they are used because fireworks contain toxic substances including arsenic, potassium nitrate and other heavy metals. The noise and sight of fireworks displays can also freak pets out, leading to anxiety and distress. Most pets will try to get away from the noise so it is best to them in a safe and secure place, preferably at home. If you decide to have your pup join you during the fireworks show, we recommend wrapping them up in a blanket or a compressed shirt, like a Thundershirt, which can help relieve anxiety.

Bonus! Extra ways to get your pup prepped for the big day. If your pet is prone to anxiety, ask your
Take Your Dog for a Walkvet about ways to alleviate stress and anxiety prior to the holiday festivities. If you’re more into natural remedies, there are many natural calming products that may help with your pup’s anxiety. We also
recommend exercising your dog early in the day, whether they are prone to anxiety or not. Make sure that any off-leash time is securely fenced and any walks have a good leash as some people may set off fireworks before dark.

We hope these tips are helpful, and wish you and your pets a Happy 4th of July!

An Innovative Way to Keep Coyotes Out

Does the threat of your pet encountering coyotes keep you up at night? For pet owners down here in Southern California, it's an alarming reality, and it's all too often that we hear about pets getting taken by coyotes. Being animal lovers ourselves, we've found it hard to find a humane way to discourage these ruthless hunters from hurting our furry family members, until now. We recently came across a solution that is not only humane but also effective, called Coyote Rollers.

Coyote Rollers on Fence

Coyote Rollers are a patented ribbed roller that mounts to the top of a fence. The idea is that when a coyote tries to leap over to attack your pet, they have to grab hold of the top of the fence to pull their body over, but with Coyote Rollers installed they’re unable to latch on. Instead, their paws or legs slip on the roller and they’re forced to fall off. The series of images below demonstrate this.

Coyote Rollers

Roll Guard Incorporated, the manufacturer of Coyote Rollers, says that hundreds of these systems have been installed in homes and businesses across the United States. Not only are people choosing Coyote Rollers to protect their pets, they are also used to keep animals in yards and kennels, protect livestock, protect chicken coops, and to prevent birds from landing on the edges of signs, or other areas they shouldn’t be landing. The versatility of Coyote Rollers is providing a solution for many needs.

Coyote Rollers are manufactured in the USA. Constructed of aluminum tubing, UV resistant polymeric materials, and stainless steel components, they are made to withstand the elements for a lifetime. Our friends at Coyote Rollers are offering our customers a 5% discount. To take advantage of this discount, and to learn more about Coyote Rollers, visit their website where you’ll find additional product information, pictures, videos, dealer information and more. Enter code muttropolis5 at checkout for your 5% savings.

Since we have not used Coyote Rollers we cannot speak to their effectiveness, but we think the company has a great mission and their product is very innovative. If you are looking for a solution to keep coyotes out, we always recommend some further research to find the right fit for your yard.

Get Back to the Basics for Your Pup

Now that we’re all back in the swing of things, with New Years festivities behind us, it’s a great time to get back to basics! To us, basics are those things you wouldn’t want to, or shouldn’t have to, live without. So what would those basics be for your pup? Worry not, because we’ve got you covered with four categories that are important in maintaining your pup’s happiness, health and safety.

Dog ToysDog Grooming

Toys – Having fun is definitely a basic need, so be sure your pup has the right kind of toys to keep their endorphins up! Our vast assortment includes plush, interactive, toss and retrieve, tough, rubber, and funny dog toys. With an array of options, you’re sure to find at least a few your pup will fancy, tempting them to up their playtime.

Grooming – Every dog gets dirty, so grooming supplies are essential to keep your pup feeling fresh, smelling good and staying clean. Our grooming supplies include dog shampoos, conditioners, sprays and more. We recently started carrying BASS brushes, an excellent choice to aid you in keeping your pup’s coat tangle free. For nearly 30 years, BASS has designed, produced and sold the finest professional hairbrushes, and now they’ve created an innovative line of pet grooming brushes. And don’t forget about dental care. Keeping your pet’s gums healthy reduces bacteria and helps to keep them infection free. Dog toothbrushes and toothpaste are must-haves, but dental dog treats and dental dog toys are also excellent supplemental ways to fight plaque.

Dog DiningDog Collars

Dining – Food is an undeniable basic, a staple, an essential for a healthy life, and much like us, our pets have evolved to enjoy their meals served in some sort of bowl or feeder. Our dining department is stocked with dog bowls, raised dog feeders, treat jars and dog placemats. When determining which style is right for your pup, consider height. Raised feeders and bowls are recommended by veterinarians as they help your pup not to gulp down their food, thereby reducing air intake, and you guessed it, air outtake

Collars – We recommend regular walks to keep your pup fit and full of life, and what’s needed for a walk? A dog collar of course! Without a collar you can’t attach a leash, or an engravable pet tag, another basic we recommend to keep your pet safe. Whether your four-legged friend is big or small, likes to pull or keeps a calm pace, is a fashionista or prefers to look classic, our dog collar assortment includes just the right collar to meet their needs and suit their personality.

We could go on and on about other beneficial basics, but you get the gist. Visit us in-store or online to shop for these, and other, essentials for your pup. We’d love to help your pup get back to basics!

Tips To Keep Your Pets Safe This New Years Eve

Happy New Year

We’d like to wish you and your pets a very Happy New Year! With celebrations right around the corner, we wanted to share a few tips and suggested precautions to help keep your furry friends and family members safe and sound for the holiday.

Small Chrome Bone Engravable Pet TagCheck your pet’s ID. Be sure your dog is wearing an up-to-date and visible ID tag on their collar at all times. This way, in the unfortunate event that they get lost, they can be returned to you promptly!If you find a lost pet, check their tag first and contact their owner, but if they don’t have a tag, we recommend that you take them to your local animal shelter, where they will have the best chance of being reunited with their owners. Each year, animal shelters across the country are prepared for receiving “New Years dogs” that run off during fireworks celebrations.

Peanut Butter MunchersKeep your pets on their normal diet. Human food and drinks should be out of reach of pets. Any change in a pet’s diet can result in indigestion and diarrhea. Foods and drinks such as alcohol, onions, chocolate, coffee, avocado, grapes & raisins, salt and yeast dough are especially harmful and can be potentially toxic to animals. Ingestion of alcohol may cause intoxication and weakness that could lead to a coma and/or respiratory failure. Keeping dog treats on hand will allow guests who want to give your dog food a healthy and safe alternative.

Always keep matches and lighter fluid out of pets’ reach. Many types of matches contain chlorates, which if ingested can damage blood cells and lead to difficulty breathing, in the most severe cases it can result in kidney disease. Lighter fluid is also very harmful. It can cause skin irritation and if ingested, gastrointestinal irritation and central nervous system depression. If inhaled, aspiration pneumonia and breathing problems could develop.

Never use fireworks around pets. When curious pets get too close to fireworks, whether activated or unused, there is the potential for severe burns and/or trauma. Many types of fireworks contain toxic substances including arsenic, potassium nitrate and other heavy metals. Also, the noise and sight of fireworks displays can spook pets, leading to anxiety and distress. Most pets will try to get away from the noise so it is best to them in a safe and secure place, preferably at home.

If needed, take additional precautions to keep your pet calm. Even well-adjusted pets can get anxious during out-of-the-ordinary events. If your pet is prone to anxiety, please consider consulting with your veterinarian on ways to alleviate their fear and anxiety prior to the New Years festivities.  ThundershirtThere are many natural calming products that may help. We also recommend exercising your dog early in the day, whether they are prone to anxiety or not. Make sure that any off-leash time is securely fenced and any walks have a good leash as some people may set off fireworks before dark.

We hope these tips are helpful, and wish you and your pets a safe and  Happy New Year!

The Pursuit for the Perfect Dog Collar

6a00e55132d8be8834019b00b2d1d7970b-200wiWhether your four-legged family member is a fashionista or an avid outdoor explorer, moves at a slow pace or constantly pulls on the reigns, we have just the right dog collar to meet their needs. Looking for a new dog collar can be confusing, especially with such a plethora of different sizes, styles, materials and more to choose from! This is why we’ve compiled some tips to help guide you towards the right collar. To get started, we like to consider a few features including size, durability, safety and ability to clean.

~~~
SIZE
Unfortunately there is not a set of standard sizes for pets like there are for humans, so it’s very important to always look closely at the sizing for each collar you are considering. For the ideal fit, you will want to allow for one to three fingers to fit between the collar and your dog’s neck, depending on your dog’s size.So, when you measure your pup’s neck,
6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d2a1c9970d-200wibe sure to place the appropriate number of fingers underneath the measuring tape to find the true size.Below is a breakdown of how many fingers we advise according the size of the dog.
Small Size Dog (20 pounds or less) – 1 finger’s width
Medium / Average Sized Dog – 2 finger’s width
Extra Large Dog – 3 finger’s width
DURABILITY
6a00e55132d8be8834019b00ca005c970b-200wiDurability comes from both the fabric used to construct a collar as well as the closure. Quality nylon webbing is a sure bet when it comes to strength and durability! But leather collars can also provide the strength your pup needs, and quality leather softens with wear for a very comfortable fit. One thing to watch out for if you choose leather is potential wear around the buckle, so stay mindful of that.
Most nylon collars have plastic buckle closures. If you are purchasing your pup’s new collar in a store, be sure to open and close the buckle a few times and give the collar a good tug when closed to ensure it doesn’t pop open with force. If you choose a collar that has a traditional metal buckle and loops, you don’t have to worry about the risk of the collar popping open per say, but make sure that the hardware is quality and solidly secured on the collar.
6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d2705c970b-115wi   6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d25b8e970c-115wi 6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d25ae1970c-115wi  6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d270e5970b-115wi
SAFETY
Safety correlates quite a bit with durability, so be sure to cross-check the quality of the material and closures, but there are a few other things to be mindful of as well. Many pups need collars specific to training. These collars are often referred to as “slip,” “choke” or “martingale” collars, and are made with mostly leather or nylon with additional nylon or a chain link. This design is used to reduce tugging with a swift, clean correction. We don’t recommend using training collars everyday, just went necessary or until the behavior is corrected.
6a00e55132d8be8834019b00ca529a970d-800wi
Another safety concern that many small dog owners face is pressure on a pup’s neck. For smaller breeds, placing pressure on the neck, specifically the tracheal area, can cause coughing, gagging or choking. Harnesses are a great option for pups that have trouble with pulling, as they control the dog without placing pressure on their neck or back, but instead around the chest and breastbone.
It’s important to also be mindful of visibility when it is dark out. Check out our Night Safety Tips to learn the importance of outfitting your pups in the appropriate gear to ensure they are seen when it is dark out. We carry a collection of lighted and reflective collars to help keep your pup safe.
CLEANING6a00e55132d8be8834019b00c9f6c0970c-200wi
Is your pup extra active, often getting messy or playing in the water? If so, then a waterproof collar might be the perfect solution. Specially made to not absorb moisture, retain dirt and harbor bacteria, waterproof collars generally stay clean as is. And if your pup does manage to get them dirty, all you need to do is rinse the collar under warm water.
For those pups that aren’t quite as active or messy, but still need their collar to be freshened up from time to time, there are many nylon and fabric collar options that are easy to hand wash, or are machine washable. But pay special attention to the instructions on each collar, as many cannot be machine dried.
6a00e55132d8be8834019b00d26bae970c-200wiOnce you’ve considered these key collar features, it’s time to search out the style that best fits you and your pup’s personality.
