MUTT’S NEW: We’re Going Camping!

Camping Collection

I don’t know about you, but when I think of summer, one of the first things that pops in my head is camping. Sleeping in a tent, making yummy s’mores, what’s there not to love?! In honor of this popular summer activity, we have curated a collection dedicated to camping. If any of these items remind you of Wes Anderson’s 2012 movie Moonrise Kingdom, then you know where we got the inspiration from!

rIMG_6974The “Pup Scout” shirt, dress and beret take us back to our old Girl and Boy Scout days! Your friends will be thinking your pup is selling Girl Scout cookies or learning how to make a fire with these goods. The “I Love Camping” hoodie is perfect for those cool camping nights, too!

While the humans light up the BBQ and snack on yummy food, let your pup enjoy the fun, too! With eco-friendly breakfast toysrIMG_6777 like pancakes, bacon and eggs made of 100% leather and realistic-smelling pork ribs and chicken legs toys, you won’t have to feel like you’re leaving your dog out of the yummy goodness.

When you’re out camping, you’re sleeping in a sleeping bag, but what about your pup? Check out the ultimate portable dog bed from Ruffwear – this thing is not only comfortable and warm, but can be rolled up when it’s not used, making it the easiest thing you’ll have to pack. Another bonus? It’s machine washable, making it another easy thing the clean when you get home!

Our Camping Collection will make you wish that it could be camping season all year long! To peep the rest of the collection, visit our website or any of our three Southern California stores. Now, get to packing!!

MUTT’S UP: 5 Ways to Keep Your Dog Cool

765-cool
We LOVE summer. But, news flash: it’s hot. Humans are able to keep in tune with our bodies and know when we need to be cool, but how can you tell when your dog is hot? Signs of heatstroke in dogs can include excessive panting, bright red tongue, thick, sticky saliva and dizziness, to name a few. How can heatstroke be prevented? Keep them cool! We’ve come up with a list of five things that are sure to keep your dog cool during the warm months.
KoolCollar1. The Kool Collar. Add some ice and clip around your dog’s neck. It’ll cool down your pup’s whole body!
2. Make sleeping a breeze with a Pressure Activated Cool Pet Pad. If they made this in a human size, we’d want one. This pad isPressure Pad pressure activated and will keep your pup cool for 3-4 hours. The “coolest” part? It re-charges itself automatically when it’s not being used – no refrigeration, water or electricity needed!
popsicle3. Freeze a toy! Toys like the Chilly Bone and the Freezable Popsicle are made to freeze. All you have to do is soak the toy and pop it in the freezer. Not only will these toys cool your pup down, but they promote teeth and gum health!
iCool Vest
4. A cooling vest is always a good idea. The iCool vest is made of water-cooling material and doesn’t need any refrigeration. Let the vest soak, wring out the excess water and voila! Your pup will be cool in no time!
5. Let them take a swim! A good ol’ swim will definitely help your pup cool down! The Ruffwear K9 Float Coat is the dog version of a life jacket – need we say more?
Summer can be fun if you keep your and your pup safe at all times. To check out more ways to keep  your dog cool, peep our Summer Essentials Collection. Enjoy!

Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon this Sunday, September 7th!

Surf Dog Pup

It’s that time of the year again – Labor Day is over, September is in full swing, and the 9th Annual Surf Dog Surf-a-Thon + Beach Day is on! Join us this Sunday at the Del Mar Dog Beach from 8AM-2PM for this exciting event, featuring a Surf Dog Competition, a Paddle Board Parade and a ton of booths, including Muttropolis! Surf Dog is hosted by the Helen Woodward Animal Center; money raised from this event goes towards the orphaned animals at the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

If you think your pup has what it takes to enter the Surf Dog Competition, you can register here. Competition contestants will participate in ten minute heats based on your pup’s weight class. First place pups from each heat will move on to the finals, where the top three finalists will be crowned!

If you’re interested in participating in Surf Dog’s first ever Paddle Paws Parade, register here. This is a fun, new event where pups and their parents dress up in costumes and paddle board – how fun, right?!

If you’re more into watching rather than participating, that’s great too – there will be TONS of booths featuring everything from food to pet training to (yours truly) Muttropolis! We’ll be there with Ruffwear showing everyone the cool (literally!) products Ruffwear has for summertime.

Like we said, this yearly event is taking place this Sunday, September 7th, from 8AM-2PM. We hope to see you and your pup there!

Check it out: “My Dog is My” Photo Contest with Ruffwear

What does your dog mean to you? A companion? Entertainment? Motivation? Everyone has a different answer and we, along with Ruffwear, want to know what you have to say.

Ruffwear’s year-long campaign, “My Dog is My…” encourages dog owners to share what their dog means to them as a reminder and inspiration to others. Now is your turn to proclaim your "My Dog is My…" for our My Dog is My Photo Contest!  Starting Monday, July 28th, Facebook and Instagram users are invited to participate by simply posting a photo of your pup to our Facebook page or on Instagram  with the hashtags #mydogismy and #muttropolis, and tell us what your dog means to you. To make it even more fun, you can download the “My Dog is My” sign, fill it out and send us a photo! The winner of the contest will be selected at random on Friday, August 1st 1:30PM PST. The random winner will receive a special Muttropolis + Ruffwear prize pack.

To get into the spirit of this contest, we decided to ask some of our fellow Muttropians what their dog meant to them. Here’s what they had to say:

Pet Health: Help Those Hot Paws!

Getty_rm_photo_of_dog_on_trail_with_woman

Summer is here and the heat is on! Have you noticed your pup trying to avoid that hot, black asphalt on your walks? Dogs’ pads are incredibly sensitive, therefore, the asphalt can be extremely harmful. One of our customers recently brought their 10-week-old Husky puppy in with burnt, cracking pads due to the hot pavement. The owner had taken him on a long run on the asphalt; this poor pup barely wanted to stand on his paws!

We highly recommend covering your pup’s paws up by wearing socks or boots during this summer heat, especially if you take your pup on long mid-day walks or runs. Not only do they look super stylish, they protect your pups’ sensitive pads from the scorching asphalt! If the damage has already been done, like the Husky’s, we recommend using Vetericyn Wound and Skin Care Spray to disinfect and clean your pups’ paws. After the paws have been sprayed, bandage them with the Pawflex Bandages while their paws heal is. You can find these products at any of our Muttropolis locations or on our website!

Night Safety Products & Tips, Just in Time for Halloween!

Dog Night Safety
As darkness continues to set in, we are here to help protect
your pup! Daylight Saving Time ends on Sunday, November 3rd, which
means our evenings will be much shorter than we’d like. Since the safety and
health of your pets is our top priority at Muttropolis, we’re dedicated to
finding the latest and most innovative products to help diminish any danger walking
in the dark may bring.

Many people don’t realize how mindful and prepared you
should be before going out in the early morning or late evening for walks or
runs with your four-legged friends. Venturing out without lights and/or
reflective gear can put our pups, and yourself, in harms way. Visibility is
poor when it is dark out, which means it is harder for you to see obstacles of
all sort, and for those live obstacles to see you. With that said, it is
crucial to use caution and be outfitted with the appropriate safety products.

Lighted Dog CollarLighted collars and leashes are hands-down our number one
recommendation. Unlike reflective products, lighted products provide
illumination even when light isn’t shining on them. Our Lighted Dog Collar and Lighted
Dog Leash
are
innovative and fashionable. They are made by Pup Protector with
cutting edge thermoplastic polyurethane and bright LED lights and feature three
settings. Pup Protector is a brand built on the mission to protect pups from
danger when it is dark out. Their products are durable, versatile, stylish and
sleek, and offer benefits far beyond keeping your four-legged friend safe
during early morning or late night walks and runs. When you choose a Pup
Protector collar and leash, you’re also able to:

(1) Easily spot your dog off leash

(2) Distinguish your dog in a large pack or at a dog park

(3) Keep an eye on your dog in your yard

(4) Differentiate between multiple dogs by choosing collars
with different LED colors

Ruffwear Beacon Dog Safety LightLooking for a little less light? Or have a non-lighted,
non-reflective collar and leash set that you’d like to continue to use in the
dark? Then safety lights are an
excellent choice for you. They easily attach to a collar, leash, or apparel. We
carry the Ruffwear Beacon Dog Safety
Light.
I
t
is lightweight, compact and clips on quickly and easily.
Featuring a high-intensity LED, it creates a halo of red light around the dog
and offers multiple blinking modes. Like a lighted collar or leash, this is an
excellent choice to ensure your pup is seen and can see. We recommend
purchasing more than one, that way you can wear one too. It’s better to be safe
than sorry!

Reflective collars and leashes, as well as reflective dog apparel, are also helpful in
low-light conditions. They increase visibility as long as there are lights
around to reflect off of them, so if you and your pup venture out near street
lights, building lights or headlights, then reflective products may be good for
the two of you. However, to stay on the safest side, we recommend reflective
products to accompany lighted products. We carry a wide selection across both
of these categories, many products made by reputable brands Ruffwear and RC Pets Products.

Even if you and your pup are outfitted with all the best
lighted and/or reflected products, be sure to always use caution and maintain an attitude of awareness. It’s a great
idea to carry a flashlight, that way you can stay in control of your
visibility. Many of our customers find headlamps useful. They free up your
hands and provide lots of light!

Sidewalks or walking trails are ideal, but if you have to
walk along a roadside, be sure to walk
against traffic
. That way you and yo
ur pup can easily see the traffic
coming and vice versa. And remember, what you wear makes a difference too! Veer
away from dark clothing and invest in something reflective, or take our
suggestion and purchase an extra safety light. Improving your visibility only
increases your combined visibility, and thus increases your safety.

So
suite up your pup (and yourself) for night safety and
don’t forget to always stay alert. The safety products discussed in the
post, and many others, can be found in any one of our three Southern
California store locations or online at Muttropolis.com.

We wish you and your furry friends a safe and
Happy Halloween!
